I'm wondering if you guys had any idea why my bear bait went cold about a week n a half ago. I started baiting on Aug 6th. The next day I had a sow and 2 cubs hitting the bait. The day after that a nice 200-250# bear was coming in multiple times a day. Couple other little ones would come once in a while, but I pretty much had at least one bear at the bait everyday until it was gone. Went up to bait again Aug 14th and put 100lbs out again, Again bears everyday until it was gone. Went up and baited Sept 1st, Put out over 100lbs of the same stuff. Go back up Sept 7th for a hunt, Sneek into my bait first time that morning with bow in hand only to find the bait still right full and not one bear picture on the camera. A bull moose did come check it out one night though.

I noticed there is ZERO blueberries, raspberries and even the cherry trees have no berries this year. Tons of plants around, last year the ground was littered with them and my bait would get pounded everyday. I figured it would be BETTER with no berries around. But I'm definitely wrong on that.

Did a bit of walking around and noticed a fairly good acorn crop this year. Could this be the reason? Last 3 years I've shot a bear first night in the stand. Kind of stumped on whats happening,

Anyone care to take a guess?

Bear love acorns...

Later season when cooler nights arrive, and especially after we start getting frost I find straight meat is the best bait....Make sure its in small chunks so that the bear has to eat it there, and isn't able to carry it away...

Put a beaver carcass in your bait and they will be there for sure. I don't think there is anything better to bring them in, at least where I hunt.
Cheers!!

Works good..Chop it up or the bear will just drag the whole thing away his first trip in....Make it so he has to come back!

We usually throw one in the bait barrel and then hang one in pail off a rope in the trees and shoot the bottom with a .22 Then you get the nastiest drip comming out of the pail and brings in em for miles.
At out sites beavers last a day at best, even in the ones in the tree's. After that we use KFC grease, oats and donuts and that keeps them at the site.
This is spring bear which is probably different then your guys fall hunts.

Just a thought but make sure not prick has come into your site and pissed on the barrel, Ive heard of this being done before.

Cheers!!

A buddy told me last year he fed them for too long before the season started, and they got kinda fat and lazy, and only came to the bait late at night.... That couldn't possibly be what's happening to your bait?
