Bear bait is out

I have put my bear bait out today. I used scrap meat and fryer grease, I will pick up some oats and other stuff when re stock it next week. I have the trail camera out and an excellent shooting lane for the tree stand. Me and my friend are contemplating hunting from the ground i do have the Marlin 444 ready to go for back up incase the bow doesn't go well.

Anyone have any luck on their baits yet?? Ill keep you posted.
 
Im going to put the barrel out today with a few accumulated scraps and oil.....a long way to go before Bear season here but they are out early this year and have nothing to eat....so I think its a good time to have them form habbits and claim territory. Probably wont start serious baiting until a month before the season.
 
The only place that spot and stalk works well is on Vanc. Island, where bears are spotted on the sparsely treed sides of mountains, otherwise, it's a baiting game, same goes for Quebec. Baiting is not an easy hunt either, nothing is guaranteed in hunting of any kind, esp. archery.
 
I have found with baiting you reduce the chance of shooting a sow with small cubs.As I have seen the new cubs are very small and hard to see in grass,bush etc.
Baiting is not for everyone as it takes alot of time and hard work to keep a bait going.
My son and I spent 18-20 nights in a stand until he got a chance at a good bear.(Boar)
That is not including the time and work included in keeping the baits active and full.
I think baiting for Black Bears is the best most humane way to take a good Black.

Baited this past weekend but it is awfully early considering the season doesn't open until the end of the month. If the bears start hitting it early it could be an expensive season.

That is your opinion and you are entitled to it. What you don't realize is that we (all hunters) are in this together and we have a lot of enemies. Just because baiting bears doesn't float your boat doesn't make it wrong.

As hunters (same goes for firearm owners) we have to stick together and defend all aspects of the sport. Otherwise it will be whittled down to the point that all hunting will be outlawed.

Last year I tried baiting bears for the first time. I staked a liberal out covered in honey. I didn't get anything ...I guess there are some things even a bear won't eat!!!

In 20 yrs of hunting and fishing in Saskatchewan's Northern Forest I have seen 1 bear that wasn't on my bait.
I have seen more bears in my yard than in the forest!
There is only one way to hunt bear in the forest and that is over bait.
If you want to take a 2 yr old then yes it's easy,if you don't factor in the long hours and amount of work involved.
I have only bear hunted with a bow and set up at 15 - 20yds.
If you want to take a mature boar then you have to know what you are doing and have everything right.
 
I shot my first bear walk and stalk. It is doable, and easy. You will find them on the hill sides eating grass. BUT..... You can not hunt for trophy effectively in this manner. You can sometimes mistake a lone bear or a boar for a sow with cubs. I have seen with my own eyes a black bear go down, and then out of the tall grass out runs 3 cubs to the tree tops. Not a pretty sight, and is illegal, unethical, and a waste. By baiting, you have a ton of work, and an exciting hunt ahead of you. If you did your bait right in the right area, you will have a lot of action and will be able to get your bead on a large bear, with plenty of time to make your choice on whether to pull or not
