Bear bait is out

Did I touch a nerve there D*ckhead?

Yes. Every year when guys get around to talking about bear hunting and baiting bears, some 'holy'then'thou' schmuck, like you, has to come along and preach about how it's not hunting and all that bulls**t.

So yeah, just go away if you don't like it. :slap:

I don't hunt over crops either, that's also shooting as opposed to hunting. You guys do what you want. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, I hope the anties don't get ahold of a bunch of vidios of Bears beening shot with their heads stuck in a barrel. Suzuki could have a field day with that.

I obviously wasted my time being civil to you, so go away.

Here's how we rig beaver carcasses in a 5 gallon pail about 7' up.It started to snow sideways after we got done replenishing our baits this afternoon......Harold......ignore the lineman spurs I'm wearing it helps climbing trees!

The other way to do that is with an old clothes drier drum suspended like you have the pail. When the maggots fall through the old bear just lays on it's back and waits for them.
and mtm add my name to the list of guys who have told you foad toad

MTM for your info, I have never baited bears in my life. Only spot and stalk.

For anybody:
If you've got something constructive to add to this discussion, maybe share your baiting techniques then do so, if not then move along. Contribute to the stuff that interests you.

Like 9 out of 10 posts on this site I don't even look at. It's all the same stuff re-hashed over-and-over, which is OK if you like repeating yourself.

Of the 1 in 10 I do read, I only 'contribute' to maybe 1 in 10 of those.

Later...

saving $ for baiting

For baiting, you can often get outdated pastries and sweets form the local baker or supermarket. Bribes work.
You can get meat, bones, and trimmings from the butcher and supermarket.... Again.... bribes work.
For the dedicated, you can get an ice cream pail, and put in freezer, and keep adding your bacon/sausage grease throughout the year. You can easily fill up a pail if you cook breakfasts on the weekends. Bacon grease is hardcore. Mix it into oats or just spread it.
Getting grease from a restaurant will also work, and again...may require a bribe.
beaver carcasses can be obtained from hutterite colonies, and will probably cost you. You may have to buy a blanket or something as well LOL Beaver carcasses are invaluable.

Make your bears work for the bait, and make it so it cannot be dragged away. I love mbogo3's method with he beaver. I have in the past cabled beavers to a tree at the 6-8 foot level with success.

Pile deadfall on your baits. Hang them up. Put them into barrels with restricted access. You want to make a nice tasty smelly treat that required effort. Not a quick meal that gets emptied in an hour.

Tried baiting bears in Saskatchewan about 25 years ago when I was into archery.

Fell out of a tree.

Impaled my leg with a broadhead.

Stuck the truck in a swamp, took 11 hours to get out.

Would I do it again if it were legal here?

Sure, I haven't hurt myself in a while, I'm sure I'm due.:D

Honey burn bear attractant

Find a can that will hold a can of sturno fairly snug.
Put the sturno can inside this can and about 1/2” above the top of the sturno can cut three notches in the outside can to create tabs.

Cut the notches like this: |______l

Bend the notches up so that another can that fits inside will sit on the bent up tabs just above the sturno and the opening will provide air for the flame.
Punch holes into the sides at the top of the outside can and put a wire handle on it if you want to hang it up.

Fill the inside top can Âľ full with honey and water mix.
The more water the longer the burn.
Light the sturno and put it in the outside can, bend the tabs up and put the can of honey inside and hang it up on a branch.
Let it burn.

Can use honey or molasses.

A mix of maple syrup, marshmallows, and strawberry jello powder, called "Bear Crack" by some, makes a dense, sweet smoke they like.

lol I have NO IDEA what you are talking about haha

I checked the bear bait today and no luck at all its been out for over a week. Anyone in Northern Alberta having any luck?

or anywhere??

In between the holier then thou's whining and adding nothing to this thread, there was a question about trapping bears. In NS we can snare one bear per year and shoot one too if we want. We use a foot snare and bait. You must be licensed and qualified as a fur harvester to do this. There is unfortunately no spring bear season here, too many anti's or "brother" hunters who are against bear hunting. NB next door has a spring season as does Newfoundland.

Finished building my stand today. This is the first stand I've ever built. I used old pallets I got for free in town. It took me a couple days.

It's pretty sturdy I think, but the blind floor is kinda squeaky - not so good when a bear is sitting in front of your blind.

This thread is about bear baiting, if some of you don't like it that's fine, you are entitled to your opinion just leave this thread alone and go somewhere else.

The next person to sh1t disturb in this thread will be receiving an infraction.

Knock it off with the swearing as well!!!!

We have had good luck with pork and beef bones and fat that you can get for free at some butcher shops,Oats and old deep fryer grease. The old grease is great because they track it with them. When we think we have a good bear coming we try to hang beaver(the best bait)
We have found that once you have a few bears hitting the bait the work start's.We only kill one or two bears each year at are baits so it is lots of work, with a small number of bears taken.

"Pretty sturdy I think...?"

^ Just hackin' on ya'... ;)

What did you use to secure the cross-members to the trees?
I've heard from a few people about stands built with timbers like that. The wind causes the trees to move and over time, the spikes or screws that anchor the frame work loose.

It does look like a pretty decent set-up.
