Bear baits getting smashed!

Anyone else getting excited for fall bear in Ontario ?? Let's hear about your baits.. We started baiting two weeks ago with the regular fish stink baits over a barrel with donuts at out established bait sites. They were all hit within two days. Appears as though there are very few berries this year so the baits are getting smashed. I love bear hunting and will be out on opening day...

How are your baits?? Getting hit hard?? What are you using?? Post your tips and tricks!! I spray anise on the first couple days of the hunt and it always brings them in..

Go by yourself. I have only been hunting bears for the past 2 season's, both years by myself.

I haven't put out my bait yet, but will in the next week or so. Here in Ontario with the crazy spring we had, they are virtually no apples or any fruits growing. So I would assume the bait will be a hot item in the woods.

That depends on where in Ont...Here there is lots of apples in places, and the blackberries are hanging heavy at our camp, along with a bumper crop of acorns...
 
Might be too early to acquire from trappers but beaver carcasses are the "cat's pajamas"as well as taking a tin can to your site and doing a honey burn in it while waiting in the evening....small propane burner.......Harold

Baiting a critter is not smiled upon out West AT ALL.

No sport in shooting something that is in the middle of eating.......I see it as way too "American" and skill lacking.

Guess most folks don't want to actually hike and work their asses off for their kill. :(

Different terrain. Different methods.

Baiting is more work than you arrogant and condescending people think.
But way to put down legal hunting methods. Now tell everyone than no one needs handguns or semi-automatic rifles.
Better yet, if you are in to working hard for your kills, use a knife or pointed stick. Anything else is too easy and for pussies.

I've never baited but don't frown on the practice.

I guess you would never hunt antelope over a water hole or hunt in africa either eh?

Oh and congrats on being the elected spokesman for all hunters out west.
 
Grandparents taught me to stalk my prey and earn my kill, not put out a 5 course meal and shoot it while its dining.

Back on topic, lets not derail entire thread over hunting morals.

And how long have you hunted out east?

The key would have been not calling Eastern hunters "lazy and skill-less hunters " in the first place. Reap what you sow.
 
Basically for bears just food and lots of it. oats, corn, candies, grease, beavers, meat scraps where legal, almost anything. To get them started try a honey burn or some really old stinky meat or fish. and good luck.

Last time I checked, Saskatchewan was a western province and its not a problem out here by any means.
Obviously your ignorant in baiting methods...no surprise seeing where you come from and your statements you have made.
Try hauling in 15 - 20 bait barrels in to a remote northern area. This requires alot of trail cutting and trail maintenance. Then go everyday for miles and haul bait to them.
Then go and set up 15-20 tree stands as well as trail cams.
Now go and sit in the right one to get a B&C bear. Chances are that B&C bear knows you are there and go nocturnal so you dont shoot one that season.
After all this you get the fun part of traveling miles in the bush to pull everything down, clean up and pack away in the trailer.
Taking a walk in the woods with a rifle....pffffft thats what I call easy and the lazy way of doing it. Wanna be a pompous a-hat, calling Americans lazy and guys who hunt over bait unethical go hard cause it aint gonna stop us.

OK buddy you ran this train of the rail.

Its damn near impossible to stalk black bear over here in Ont (and eastern Canada) The bush is so thick you can't see 10 feet in front of your sights. Baiting is the only way to have a real shot at a bear.

And as its been said, baiting is a helluva lot of work. So why don't you keep your bullsht opinions to yerself. If you don't want to hunt that way thats fine but DO NOT belittle and put down other hunters for using a certain method.
How about you go out an wrestle then kill the thing with yer bear hands to make it a little more "fair and sporting" after all a lead slug travelling at a 1- 2 thou ft per second is a bit unfair right? :rolleyes:

And to the OP, I really wanted to get out this season but school (university) and flight training regiments will not allow me the time unfortunately. :( Oh well. Always next year!
 
Plain and simple, its shootig fish in a barrel.

Look at all the disruption of nature people have mentioned with dragging all the stuff in and out of the woods.

Cutting new trails in, destroying habitat just so you can nearly promise yourself a kill on your trip....

So sorry for wishing to have the least impact on the environment while hunting, even if it means going home empty handed.

Enjoy your barrel fishing methods.

Let the baiters be. They are legal and ethical.

Condescending attitude you have, who gave you the right to condemn a different method of hunting than yours.

You hunt by your methods, they hunt by theirs. leave it be.
All you do is raise a bunch of hackles and divide up the hunting fraternity.
