Foxer said:Gatehouse, usually. Works great. Just don't let him bathe for a few days. Especially effective in the mating season
Baiting is utterly illegal for bears here bud, even scents and lures are out. The traditional method is to find areas where there's scat, take a look at the cut blocks, find somewhere to hole up down wind and pull out the binocs. When you spot one - start stalking. If the wind is on your side, he'll never see you coming if you go slow and dont' make a racket.
Sometimes you spot one from the road. It's not surprising - there are about 200,000 black bears and climbing around these parts. Heck, there's 50,000 on the island alone for those who go there. but usually it DOES take a little smarts to find a good one, and because you're down in the crap with them, its common to be fairly close but not have a shot for quite a while.
Mostly its an 'easy' hunt because of the time of year - no snow, no cold weather, much simpler gear needed than a fall moose hunt for example. Lots of fun. But that'd be the same for you guys if you ever get your spring hunt back.
. but how would you hunt if most of the area is owned

wow you guys are lucky then.in 20+ years of hunting deer on our land i'v seen a grand total of 2 bearsbone-collector said:well yes its true we cannot bait bears in BC but I do know from a relative afar that a gunnysack with bananas and molasses works rather well hanging from a tree , as for bear hunting and I think I can speek for Moosehunter as well we can go out any given evening and count 20-30 bears in our area without even trying so baiting here would be a waste of time IMHO
