Bear defence with a shot gun

There are bears and there are bears. A shotgun loaded with slugs is nearly useless when confronted by a coastal very large Alaskan grizz.
On the other had a shotgun will work when you are being stalked by a black bear, much smaller animal.

I only use .177 pellet rifles for coastal alaskan grizzer defense!

Got black bears over here on Lake of the Woods.
My cabin was targeted by a "bad" bear for a few days, along with a string of others.
It had broken into two cabins on my property while we were there, and out fishing. We saw it sit and watch us leave, Then when we went out aways, thought better of it and turned back, sure enough, saw it leap from the front door upper window and skidaddle back up into the woods. It had broken in and found a deep fryer, yum and spilled it all over and licked it up. We still have greasy paw prints on the door.

It came back later about 5am, and tried to break in again. I had patched up the door with some plywood but it was scraping at it and trying to pull the door open. We just made a hell of a racket yelling and banging pots and pans it decided to move along after a few minutes. I reported it to the MNR and they were looking for it, and I believe it was eventually dispatched.

I keep an unplugged 12 guage Winchester pump with 1 or 2 bear buster sonic rounds and the rest of the tube filled with 000 buckshot. That's 6-8 (Ithink) .35 caliber chunks of lead to throw per shot at a range of about 10 feet, hopefully one of which will in the heat of the moment be accurate enough to cause a bear to at least pause enough to reconsider it's decision, or preferably just die. I doubt that I would fire one shot, so dead bear hopefully if it should ever come to that.

In this case my preference was to not have a bloody dead bear carcass to clean out from my cabin. Fortunately it chose to not pursue the matter.

And I added an interior door with no windows.
Oh and a 9mm by the bed.

The Winchester SX-1 is your only tried and true Bear defence gun. Also works great on Clay's.

I would have thought that with all the experts out there I would have at least one report from a cgnut who had shot and killed an attacking bear with a shot gun?

the experts are usually better at avoiding these situations, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Such a story would have to be regional in nature, since I was just reading in Ontario Out of Doors magazine that there have only been 4 people killed by bears in Ontario in the last 30 years or so. Some additional maulings too to be sure. I personally own a 'home defense/bear defense' shotgun, but I also use it for partridge, bunnies, and dispatching destructive critters around the hacienda. My point? Such tales, if they exist, will no doubt emanate from the west part of our fair land.

if i recall there used to be 2 members here that defended themselves from black bears,
one was with a 30.06 M1 garand and if he didnt have the extra 3 rounds that the M1 has over the mag restriction he would been done like dinner.
the other was with a Cz 858 7.62x39 5 round semi, bear was DOA at his feet.;)

These threads are retarded,

Some of you are absolutely fixated on the idea of protecting yourself from a bear attack. Some of you are reasonably intelligent and I would question why you would even bother responding. Some of you need to get a life, and the rest of you will never get back the 15 minutes wasted in reading this thread.

Bears can be dangerous, prepare yourself accordingly. If the internet is your guide on avoiding/dealing with a bear encounter, you are better off staying at home.

Good luck out there;)

For hiking I carry a puma 44 mag lever action carbine with a 16'' barrel, it's lightweight and holds 9 rounds. and has plenty of penetration at the range a bear is dangerous.. My dad stopped a black bear about 10 years back with with his winchester defender 1 slug dropped it and a second finished it.. but shot placement is everything..

Good man quoting that movie. We need to finish it next week.

Personally I believe .177 is too small for the grizz. I much prefer anything that is 20MM Vulcan or bigger. Any smaller and your pretty much f**ked.

There was a guy in Wyoming? Who was out bird hunting and killed a charging Grizzly with 3 shells of birdshot up close.

I defended against a grizzly one by punching him in the nose. It more or less hurt his feelings, so we talked it out and became good freinds. Ha hah haha we would get together now and then and this story always came up. Haven't seen him in a while since we both settled down and had families. I should call.
