Bear defence with a shot gun

im only 20 and ive been charged by more elk and moose then bears

This is most likely the case. There are alot of these "bear defense" threads around. Fvcking more likely that most of these internets people that make these threads would get attacked by their neighbours cat then a bear..:p
*not saying anything about current thread or op.

Post # 64 classic !!! Thumbs up twice !!! You should do one for which gun should I buy would be long !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Way to long!!!!!!

I am interested in reading a first hand account of anyone who has successfully defended himself/herself against a bear attack with a shot gun.

If a bear attacked you with a shotgun I don't think there's much you could do to defend yourself (especially if it had the drop on you)

Still the right to arm bears is in the American constitution so you have to expect these situations.

F*ck, that's got to be the best comment of the year so far. Almost laughed myself off my chair. :D

Im only 25 and I have had two very close calls. Once fishing and once walking in the bush not far from a highway, both times I was very lucky. During a fishing trip in Dalton post during the salmon run, I was walking back to camp on a narrow trail with two friend and the days catch. Big momma Griz was fishing with her cub along the river however because of how bendy the trail is, we were not able to see momma until we were right on top of her. She was not impressed, she stood on her hind legs and made her presence known, I could have touched her. We threw our s**t down, fish, rod and bait, and ran as fast as humanly possible. I'm confident that had we not had that fish, she would have chased and one of use probably would not have made it back. When we made are way back for the second time, accompanied by someone with a gun both the fish and the bait was gone. I will never forget that roar, growl... That sound shook me to the core.

The second incident, I was a little older, a little wiser. I decided to do a 45minute walk into town from a residential area taking the back trails threw the green belt, Luckily, the trail wasn't far from a main highway. 10 minutes into my walk I saw a black in the middle of the trail, I started backing a way slowly and he fallowed at a steady pace. He fallowed me up until the high way, where he stopped and walked back into the bush. I continued to walk along the high way, where I saw the black bear cross maybe 30ft from me and head back towards the residential area.

A weak later a bear was shot and killed after he had attempted to chew his way into a residents garage where I'm assuming he kept his Garbage cans.

These are first hand incidents, I also have heard stories from friends where they had no choice to use their gun.

I no longer go into the bush with out some form of bear deterrent.

A few years ago my wife and I, then girlfriend, decided to go for a picnic. We decided to finally visit Jellystone National Park after hearing great things. We packed up our picnic basket and headed out. We arrived at about noon, as we entered the wilderness we were stopped by a park ranger named Ranger Smith, who proceeded to warn us about a well known problem bear who targeted picnic baskets. I thanked him for the info/warning, but we didn't drive all that way just to turn back.

Anyway we were having a nice lunch, when all of a sudden it happened. Out the corner of my eye I saw a brown bear standing upright wearing a white collar and green tie. He was accompanied by a much smaller bear wearing a bow tie. The big bear looked at the smaller one and said : " Hey there boo boo, these fools have a PicAnic Basket, MY PicAnic basket." to which the smaller bear cub replied "But Yogi, Mr. Ranger isn't gonna like this". ;)

where i live it is mostly apple orchards. my dad and i where walking along the top end of my grandfathers (40 some odd acres) checking the fences to see where a bear that the pickers had spotted had gotten in. my dad was carring a old single shot 12 gadge and had grabed a handfull of shells. we saw a pretty decent sized black bear so he put a shell in and shot it. (had a tag and all that)the bear just stood up and kinda looked in our direction. my dad opened the gun and realised most of the shells he had grabed where bird shot he pulled 4 shells out of his pocket before he found a slug. to this day he double checks what shells he picks up.

thats as close as ive ever came to bear defense. im honestly noteven a little scared of bears ive seen lots normally they dont want anythingtodowith people. cougars on the other hand i dont really want to run into.

a guy i used to work with and his son had to shoot a black bear though. they had gotten a moose and the bear was circling them doing the ocasinal charge to try toscare them off.

These threads are so stupid but why stoke the fire? Seems like those that ##### the most just can't help themselves when it comes to joining the conversation. CGN is a recycling bin for tired worn out topics, why antagonize and provocate more?
