Bear Defense for Women

as was stated...stick to the .303. cut id down to fit, throw in 180gn bullets, reduce the charge and at point blank range, NO BEAR IS GONNA WALK AWAY FROM THAT.
Otherwise, pick anything, roll down the window, stick the barrel out, wait until it is in the bears mouth, and pull the trigger. Done like the dishes.

Not exactly sure what caused the miss feed. Whether it was unfamiliarity, magazine failure, debris or otherwise.

My brother, and a lot of you, are suggesting a 20 gauge or a 30-30 (come to think of it i wanted to check out those leverolution rounds anyways) so maybe ill look into those. I heard a rumor about there being 20 gauge remington 870s but i wasnt having much luck on their site last night. They exist or just a myth?

20g 870s have existed for decades. My wife has one in a youth model. Light, handy, and simple to operate.

20g slugs recoil significantly lighter then 12g as well, but will still easily do in a bear.

And its also no contest when it comes to ease of operation over a Lever action 3030. The shotgun is miles ahead. I can load up the chamber and the magazine in probably an 8th of the time it takes me to load up my Winny 94.

You know this isn't a bad thought... It's the route I took for a bear defense firearm (though i have the Gen I version)... and not because it's tacticool either.

I really find a HUGE diff in the severity of the recoil in 12 gauge as compared to factory stock. An 870 or clone with recoil-reducing stock and gualandi-style slug might be worth considering.

Would an 870 with a Spec ops stock work for her. The Gen II version has 7 length settings. The claim is 85% recoil reduction. That may make it do-able for your Mom. I know you mentioned that you don't really what to go the 12 g route but this might be an option to put on the chalk board for consideration.

IMO,

A Maverick Security 88 12 G would fit the bill. It's cheap has a short enough barrel, is light and super reliable.

Put in 4 rounds of reduced recoil 00 Buck and 2 slugs just in case the bear doesn't get the message from the 00 Buck.

Another decent and cheap option is an SKS since it is at close range. Just be sure to get some mfs soft point ammo, it's pretty cheap. It is also a gun that you can use and abuse and it will keep shooting.

Epps has the Marlin 336Y compact 30-30 for $455. To me this would fit the bill perfectly as it's a youth model with a 16 1/2" barrel, relatively mild recoil, and more than enough gun at close ranges. Alternatively I would recommend a Rossi M92 in 44 mag.

M305 or 20 gauge slug both have way more stoping power than a dirty thirty with similar reciol m305 might be a little heavy though

I don't have any significant advice to give here due to lack of experience, but I would like to compliment your mom for keeping her courage and wits about her. While there were difficulties, ultimately she did drive the bear away, and that's a victory.

yep, a side by side coach gun with short barrels, in 12 ga with reduced loads or 20 ga, if it is more suited to the lady, is about the simplest bear gun out there and the "how to operate" training lessons should be over in no time. Just get her some real time and experience on firing it. don't forget to add some hip shots in the practise seccions, too. Good Luck, Go-Granny-Go!
My Mom is gonna be 96 in 9 days time. So, I'll hafta do her bear shoot'n for her!
