Bear defense gun?

I wish I'd taken a pic of the mess the yearling bear left when I locked it in the room of the guy I worked with
in Nimpkish Camp back in '74. What a destructo show that was!:) The bear made out fine, buddy's room...
not so much.;)

This is what I'm thinking is my northern sport utility rifle. 24" Ruger Mark II .338 WM in McMillan classic stock with an NECG peep. Should be rugged and reliable. I'll use 250 grain NPT. I do wonder how it fits in a helicopter since the only other firearms I carried were shorter 12 gauges. Easy to unload and make safe though. Dump the cartridges in vest, pull the bolt out and put in vest too: Happy helicopter pilot. :)

Bear spray and bangers first, then firearm as a last resort. I figure if people can stop charging hippos, lions and elephants with bolt action rifles, then I should be fine with a little practice.

I am quite happy with whatever firearm I happen to have with me, and I never go without one........In reality, they need to be way more scared of me than I am of them...............I personally have killed more bears than all the bears in NA have killed people.........Add my kid and guys like H4831 to the mix and it's damn near genocide..............The bears have way more to fear than we do...........

wow this guy must have some wicked bear hunt storys to tell

There's no place for logic liek that around here. Practice schmatice. If you were a real gun nut you would have been born with the ability to fire lethal stopping shots with a 22LR at any enraged beast.

I'm being modest. ;)

No need to carry bear spray or ammo, bears will be running the other way with their eyes burning from the mere sight of that gun....wow.

I figured it would be like those brightly - coloured poisonous things in nature. A stern warning.

Either that or the bear can't charge and laugh at the same time.

Either that or 'death by clown camo' would be too embarrassing.

So you see I've thought things through even from a bear psychology standpoint.

Nice to see you have a sense of humour, you would surely need one to carry a rifle painted like that ;)

I heard people say that life is cut short if you don't go out with an ugly gun. Or something like that anyway...

The BOYR camo is so I can set the rifle and pack down on a small grid and find the things back. Amazing how dark colours blend into landscape, including blue -handled Estwings with no orange flagging on them. Solid orange is code for non-lethal IIRC, and I do want to hide the inevitable dirt. Also, I intend to be spottable by air if the SHTF, whether bear or other misadventure.

I wish McMillan had that fluorescent chartreuse green you see on European emergency vehicles. :D

Ya but they have all ended the same so far....................loud bang.....I win!! :D Well okay some end with a "TWANG", followed by growling and snarling a little roaring then silence.........I win again !!

This is a "Bang I win" photo, from a couple weeks ago.

This is a "Twang I win" photo from a few years back.

I might be able to face the bear, but no way could I face the "cold" in that picture![/QUOTE]

When I have time, sometime I may regale you all with the tale..........it was an 18 day ordeal on the pack ice in -25-35 in a tent. I wore all my clothes, all the time, night and day, for 18 days.......and I'm used to the cold. It was the never ending 5-15 kt wind out of the east that was ugly.......
