i have this big old grizzly boar that has charged me twice.he only charges when he hears my voice.he has charged when i have been standing on my balcony and another time i was standing outside the house and he come within 37 paces before standing up a staring me down.the grass was real long so i couldnt open my pace out to figure out yards and he didnt run away when i fired 7 30/06 rounds from my garand into the ground in front of him.he is not bothered at all by my dogs.when i spoke to the CO biologist about it he assumed the bear had been habituated to domestic dogs and hated humans.probably a few run ins with berrypickers or whatever.i have IDed the particular animal as 1 that dens up about 7000m from my property and has been hunted extensivly, but has never been taken.in 2000,16 bears where trapped and tagged alone on my road.in fact the biologist said the bears in the valley where a subspeices.he was not taken and has a distinctive light couloured head and relative dark body.anyhoo is it possible that he may have been displaced from his territory.he is very tall but his condition was not great and now i beleive he is about and not going away.i dont see him but the dogs are acting strange, all the game has beetled off and i have had something cracking and smashing abou the woods around the house.i have gone in but the dogs wont come in and until the poplar leaves drop off, visibility is nil.the CO said shoot it if i see it but because i beleive it is staying the area and not being seen,i cant shoot it.should i set traps?

some meat and a nice big bore gun on the ready. i wouldn't take any chances. Those 7 shots you took should have been in the bear not at the ground. atleast after the first 2 shots in the ground.

do anything you can to get him before he does something to yourself or someone else.

Sounds like he got kicked out of his territory. Why aren`t the CO`s giving you anymore help? Are they waiting for some serious #### to happen?I agree that you shouldn`t take anymore chances,if he comes back and you are worried about your safety, shoot to kill.Call the CO after and tell them you took care of the problem because they didn`t.

i see alot of bear and so dont shoot them because i am used to them.i did not feel threatened so i didnt kill this particular boar.was neat and sureal to see this thing moving at me with dogs unable to catch up.i just want to know if its possible that he would go covert after being so overt.he rushes everytime i yelled for the dogs.does it sound possible that his intentions have changed from trying to scare me away to activly stalking?can bears get a hateon for humans.could he be so old or displaced he decides to hunt fat australian guys that dont run away.i contacted the CO and they are aware.i am pretty independent so dont really need the guvmunt guys help.just want too know what i am up against from unbiased bushmen, not some pencil neck desk jockey

If he is old it is only a matter of time before he starts looking for easy food sources, like your dogs.If he is getting bolder demand that theCO`s come out and trap him.It is only a couple more months before he will den up so he will be searching for food. You probably don`t want him trying to get into your house. It is possible that he might be thinking of you as a nice meal.Never know how desperate he is.

I don't know if you could describe it as a hate on, but yeah, some older bears can get pretty ornery. Especially if he was once king of the mountina, and is now some washed up shmuck.

He is trying to establish your area as his turf.

You gotta kill him and fast.

i have resigned myself to culling him,but hes gone all secret squirel.my original question is basically, should i trap him.i dont really agree with trapping, but in hindsight i should have shot him but now hes not directly confronting me anymore.is it heard of for a bear to be sneaking around like this?

He's just taking a break form you, maybe mucking around somewhere else. Grizzlies can cover alot of gorund in a day, he could be 100kms away right now.

He'll come back sooner or later, unless somethign kills him, especialy if he got any food at or around your place. (Your garbage, dog food or just the berries in your raspberry bushes etc)

How do you propose to trap him? Cable snare?

Grizzly bears that show no fear to human contact are often enough to stalk and kill people .There have been cases that Grizzly bears have done so and in most cases they are the victor's in such contact's .It is scary when you back track your tracks and find a grizzly bear is following your tracks  .Don't let your guard down.

Personally I wouldn't use traps. Good chance of killing your dogs if using steel traps. And I don't have the balls to try a snare on a grizzly. A snare could hurt or kill a dog as well.

Like Gate says he could be a long way off right now. I'd just be vigelant, keep the dogs in at night and be ready to shoot him 24/7. I'd also be looking for sign around the place on walks daily with the smoke pole ready to see when and if he returns. If he did return, I'd probably bait him.

he was spotted 4km away last week in a oat feild.something was causing a small rockslide above me on the river bank this weekend when i was on the river.i ambushed the game trail i was on but nothing came.something was there because the dogs where weirded out.could be a cat or something.fact is,yes this bear normally roams wide.he is well known in the area and in fact i have seen his tracks last spring and the year before.he doesnt seem to be doing his usual route.there are alot of g bear in this area and no one sees them and he has been seen by 4 other people within 6 km since my initial runin.he is normally north west but he is now mainly southwest.yes,i am sure he has been displaced and he is in the imediate area.4000m is nothing.there is normally 2 black sows with cubs and a small black boar here but they have all been gone since the incidents.its funny, the dogs where all but biting this guys ass but now will not go into the woods.animals sense things and maybe sensed he was not interested when transiting but now has a different modus operendi and they are wary.i will fix it.weird feeling though,i am sure he is trying to sneak up on me

He probably is...

Keep that gun handy, and make sur eyou havea headlamp or something like that to keep an eye out at nighht...

I would bait him , then shoot him .
Years ago I had a bear that would dump a big load in my front yard about every 3rd night and you could tell that he was feeding on a lot of oats . I waited until a day when the wind was blowing towards the bush and grainfield . I dug a couple of suckers out of the freezer and put them in a pot of water on a Coleman stove to simmer all day, in the garden . . Just before dark Mr. Bear runs out , grabs a sucker and takes off . I dropped him about 20 feet from the bait site .

this is like a fantasy...

It's like that cheesy movie with Alec Baldwin and Anthony Hopkins...

Except ULF has better weapons than a couple of wooden spears. Did someone say spear? :D

Actually, the bear isn't out to get you personally.Well, maybe he is... :? :D He got kicked out of his area by a younger, but stronger bear.

He moved to your turf because it looks good to him- no other grizzlies to challenge him.

He's probably got rotten, sore teeth- So it makes him grumpy, too.

When he charged you, he was feeling you out. It's a good thing you stood your ground. You acted like another dominant bear, and he didn't want to risk another fight that may #### him up. If you had been in the bush, that is exactly what you shoudl have done, if you are armed. Act like another dominant bear. (Okay, this won't work if you are strolling by a moose carcass he has claimed, he's not going to back down then!)

Your voice may have been a trigger as it was a challenge.

I don't know if he is actively trying to sneak up on you, but he is going to cause problems whenever he comes around. If he was unphased by dogs and gunfire, he is going to get less and less concerned about you, and will act more aggressivley. Could be he's deaf, too. :D

Baiting him isn't a bad idea, but set yourself up in a place where you are safe. You aren't dealing with a problem garbage black bear here, this is a recently deposed alpha male grizzly!

I don't know much about snaring bears, except the CO's do it sometimes. But remember the one they snared that now resides in the Smithers airport!

I think trapping will probably create more chance of a problem.Best bet is to shoot him the next time he is coming close to your house and dogs.
