Bear Protection choice

I'm going on a 5 day fishing trip to a remote lake in Northern Saskatchewan and thinking that I should bring some bear protection. I've gone there before without any, but I'm thinking this time I probably should.

Here are the options:

Ruger M77 .30-06

or

Savage 24 .22/20 Gauge

What do you all think?

'06 is more versatile in case you decide to shoot other stuff while you're out

The Savage 24 loaded both barrels with birdshot so when the bear charges, you can blind him.

Just kidding. Take the 30-06 with 180 grain premium ammo.

The reason I'm thinking about the Savage is that it takes down really easily so it would be easy to pack.

Better yet... go with a 12 gauge with slugs. Can you borrow one from a buddy?

I have 2 12 guages, but the one has some hammer spring problems so it's not reliable. The other can only take target loads. That's why I didn't include them.

Why can it only take target loads? What kind of shotgun is it?

Even fixed full choke guns can shoot modern slugs. Accuracy might not be great, but it's better than a 20g.

Not that you should ever need one, but that is an excuse if I've ever seen one!

The one is a Remington 11-87 Sporting Clays with a light contour barrel. 2 3/4" 1 1/8 dram only.

BTW, for those that think I'm crazy for considering the 20 gauge. I think that a face full of #6 would be more of a deterent than any bear spray and lots of guys go out with only that.

I honestly think both are poor choices for bear protection. But I did pick the 30-06, just so you could shoot the bear while he's eating your slow and fat friend

All you need is a half-dozen Five-of-Diamonds and a can of Off.

If a bear shows up, holler at him - if that doesn't work, grab a stick and chase his ass into the bush.

If that doesn't work, and he eats you, you'll have provided CGN with grist for another 10,000 ####ING BEAR PROTECTION THREADS...., which will be sufficient to assure that you burn in hell for eternity.

The real question is how bear spray works on mallards...

Okay, the 20 gauge and #6 was a poor choice, but I still say it's better then bear spray.
