I just eat a lot of beans, Limburger cheese, broccoli, cabbage and wash it all down with copious amounts of draft beer the night before I go out to the bush. That way, when the bear attacks and I s**t myself, I instantly become unpalatable.
hope my dogs (50lb husky/lab/akitas) make a mess of the bear
Pretty well any big game rifle or a 12 ga. with slugs or buckshot will do it. One thing you shouldn't overlook and that i have personally used and found to be excellent is pepper spray. Just make sure the can is new and not old stock. I have turned 2 bears with the stuff, but neither was a determined charge. One was a large boar that just wouldn't turn around no matter how much noise I made or how many rocks I threw in its direction. The pepper spray did the trick when it was 10 ft. away. Before anyone jumps up and down as to the why 's- I was at an isolated mine in NW ON, and was walking from the bunkhouses to the mine, about 1 km. I saw dozens of bears, but they always turned into the bush before I got close, except for those 2.
They wont. I have spent an entire night sleepless listening to and watching some very 'bear aware' camp dogs try and convince a small black to stop digging shrimp shells out of the snow. (proper waste management was the topic of my next email to management) Anyway these dogs spent thier whole life in the bush and knew more about bears then anyone on this board. They could'nt budge that small bear. Those two worked together like you would'nt believe and both had scars from previous encounters to prove they know the game. Basically a bear can reach a hell of a long way with a forepaw. You can use a bear dog as a hazing method but in a fight they are going to die if the bear decides to make a stand. Not that your dogs wont maybe try to be helpful and they may gain you the moments you need to escape but they wont win and they will be grossly disapointed in you if you can't fullfill your duty to the pack.
