Well look at that after all of the spewing about the prince the 375 Ruger is just a shortened 375RUM I finally see why it has potential... :p

I voted High Powered Bolt cause thats what I carry when I'm hunting. I've rarely seen bears while hunting though I am conscious that they are there. Near our Moose camp in northern Quebec there are many.......we just don't see them. Lots of sign, I've had one huffing at me from real close, yet the bush was so dense that I couldn't see it. I just made lots-o-noise and hoped for the best.
During deer season the biggest threat we face is other hunters. There are some real dumbass idiots out there.

I just did a quick check on est black bear numbers in Quebec 70,000/Ontario 80- 100,000/Alberta 35,000 combined there are still more black bears in BC...

for the past 2 years, Marlin 1894 lever in 44 Rem Mag loaded with 270gr Speer @ 1550 fps. It's fairly light, short, and holds ten rounds.

previous to that, whatever bolt action hunting rifle I felt like packing :)

I just eat a lot of beans, Limburger cheese, broccoli, cabbage and wash it all down with copious amounts of draft beer the night before I go out to the bush. That way, when the bear attacks and I s**t myself, I instantly become unpalatable.

Now that is funny :D

I pack either a 30-30 or 12 gauge shortie, both effective at short range.

I always pack common sense followed by an understanding of wild animals....In the rare occasion this is not enough an 870 and slugs is tough to beat....

hope my dogs (50lb husky/lab/akitas) make a mess of the bear

They wont. I have spent an entire night sleepless listening to and watching some very 'bear aware' camp dogs try and convince a small black to stop digging shrimp shells out of the snow. (proper waste management was the topic of my next email to management) Anyway these dogs spent thier whole life in the bush and knew more about bears then anyone on this board. They could'nt budge that small bear. Those two worked together like you would'nt believe and both had scars from previous encounters to prove they know the game. Basically a bear can reach a hell of a long way with a forepaw. You can use a bear dog as a hazing method but in a fight they are going to die if the bear decides to make a stand. Not that your dogs wont maybe try to be helpful and they may gain you the moments you need to escape but they wont win and they will be grossly disapointed in you if you can't fullfill your duty to the pack.

Bear repellent

Pretty well any big game rifle or a 12 ga. with slugs or buckshot will do it. One thing you shouldn't overlook and that i have personally used and found to be excellent is pepper spray. Just make sure the can is new and not old stock. I have turned 2 bears with the stuff, but neither was a determined charge. One was a large boar that just wouldn't turn around no matter how much noise I made or how many rocks I threw in its direction. The pepper spray did the trick when it was 10 ft. away. Before anyone jumps up and down as to the why 's- I was at an isolated mine in NW ON, and was walking from the bunkhouses to the mine, about 1 km. I saw dozens of bears, but they always turned into the bush before I got close, except for those 2.

A larger dog can put a hurting on a bear, we had to put down a 2 year old black bear years ago after a 122lb great pyrenesee got ahold of it in our yard.
I now have a 146lb Anatolian shepard dog, i don't expect him to kill a bear but i know he would try to protect me if one came along. I have seen my dog when he gets mad before and if i was a bear i still would not want to piss off that dog.
