Bear spray experiences, had an interesting one last night.

I'm a pilot and fly for a living myself, and spray cannot be inside the machine. We do have external storage we can carry it in, but in general at work it's guns only for bears. And no bangers.

Also flew the bush for a living. We never would carry an aerosol in the cabin. Gas & propane was bad enough!

I own bear spray for two reasons; 1) It's the only legal option, in parks/urban areas. 2) I don't want to shoot a sow with cubs, so I've got the 'seasoning spray' with me...

I never go into the bush without a firearm, cuz I'm scared of bears...

This.

Don't leave home without them :ninja:

Gary Shelton, a well know bear attack expert in BC, author and pro firearm, recommends the use of bear spray as well.

We are just in the process of getting some property around Bancroft. My wife brought up the topic of bears and what we will do till we get a fenced area set up for the dogs. She figures we will both carry spray and I will carry the defender or the 30-30. She will use the spray and if that were to fail I would have the gun at the ready just in case.

Having any dog in the yard is the best first alert alarm that you can have when you are outside working around the house..

Agree, in all the years of camping in the bush, we always had the dogs with us and never had a problem with bears. The difference wI see with having a property is that it is a static location and the bears will get used to it. Where as in the bush you only stay for a short while and the bears don't get used to your presence and so stay back. Likely most scenarios of bear encounters are related to a high traffic area as opposed to random encounters in the middle of nowhere.

My bear spray story involves a coyote, not a bear. There were a few coyotes that followed the rigs around and had been fed for generations. One of those had taken to nipping at peoples heels, possibly to try to get them to drop whatever they were carrying. Long story short, the little prick decided to bite me so the next time I was ready with a can of bear spray. I gave him most of the can at maybe 5 or 6 feet away and never got much reaction. Eventually he started pawing at his eyes and moved off a little ways. After a short time he returned and actually laid down in front of me, belly up in a submissive position. Being at least as big a prick as the 'yote I gave him the rest of the can. That did even less.

I've concluded that any "expert" that is recomending bear spray either hates guns, sells the ####, doesn't want bears shot, or is otherwise cheering for the bears. Its not unusual for people studying something to fall in the love with it and lose their objectivity.

My step son works in the forestry industry at High Level. 2 years ago he was back in the bush and a black bear charged him. He got the bear spray in action and hit him at about 10 feet. The bear stopped but started circling him and continued to try to get behind him as he made his way back to the chopper a couple of clicks away. It stopped the bear charge but after spraying the bear if he had've fallen or turned the bear would have been on him. He started carrying a shotgun after that.

Bear Spray is not 100% effective. There is no warranty that using it will keep you 100% safe. So use common sense and try to avoid danger and confrontation on the first place.

Further, some humans, and probably some animals have natural immunity or a high level of resistance to "Pepper Spray"...

So the plan is...be careful when used...my $0.02

Here in Ontario we have to ask if he is a predatory bear or a yogi bear before we can take action or phone bear wise number to get instructions.

Supposedly a true story, aren't they all ? :) Group of German tourists showed up at the Hospital emerg. in the Crowsnest Pass, all suffering the effects of bear spray. Turns out they were out hiking in the woods when they spotted a bear, so they naturally sprayed themselves liberally with the stuff.

Grizz
