When you can shoot endwise through a bear with an arrow or break bones as thick and hard as a large bear carries and have the projectile continue on as though nothing happend I'll take my hat off to archery. LOL

My point was that at black powder velocities, the slug leaves a relatively small diameter deep hole rather than the massive wound channel of puffy tissue left by a modern high velocity bullet. In that regard it is closer to an arrow than a modern bullet. Obviously that raises the old issue of breaking a bear's shoulder so it won't run vs shoot it through the heart debate and personally I side with the heart shot from the side.

I myself promote the stay away form things with teeth and claws as much as possible philosophy. You wont find me shooting bears that don't need to be shot unless required to protect life. As such I don't plan on the luxury of a perfect broadside there fore the penetration and bone breaking ability of a large bore heavy cast bullet appeals to me.
If your planning on only pulling the trigger on a shot that your sure is drilling a hole in the heart then cartridge selection becomes a very minor concern. Anything will do.

Same reload "target " bullet ?
Same reload "target bullet" but with soft lead ?
Store bought bullets ?

I think we have definitely narrowed it down to those 3 choices, especially if we include paper patched soft lead amongst the soft lead bullet types
