I had a feeling yesterday that I should pack something bigger than the 22-250 so I loaded up some 185 grain Core-Lokt's for my 8mm Mauser and take off for my after dinner walk.
About an hour later I meet up with a boar about three years old walking up the path towards me.
I spot him first and then I extend the bi-pod out on the 8mm and lay on the trail to observe him.
I had the 4x Bushnell Command post dead center on the little white patch on his chest. He keeps walking towards me at about 50 yards away and by this time I figure its about time to let him know he was being watched.
I went to stand up and he saw the movement in the tall grass and bolted into the bushes on my left.
I don't hunt bears anymore but I had about 2 good minutes of him in the scope to take a shot if I wanted. Other gunnutz have taken their bear this year and the stories are very good and I congratulate them on their hunts, but I choose not to shoot bears unless I have too.
I have been lucky to have taken many blackies over the last 30 years and yesterday's blackie just proves to me that I can still find them.
I know the rush of shooting a large carnivore and I also know the rush of not shooting when you got him dead to rights too.
