I had a feeling yesterday that I should pack something bigger than the 22-250 so I loaded up some 185 grain Core-Lokt's for my 8mm Mauser and take off for my after dinner walk.:) About an hour later I meet up with a boar about three years old walking up the path towards me.:) I spot him first and then I extend the bi-pod out on the 8mm and lay on the trail to observe him. :) I had the 4x Bushnell Command post dead center on the little white patch on his chest. He keeps walking towards me at about 50 yards away and by this time I figure its about time to let him know he was being watched. :D I went to stand up and he saw the movement in the tall grass and bolted into the bushes on my left. I don't hunt bears anymore but I had about 2 good minutes of him in the scope to take a shot if I wanted. Other gunnutz have taken their bear this year and the stories are very good and I congratulate them on their hunts, but I choose not to shoot bears unless I have too.:) I have been lucky to have taken many blackies over the last 30 years and yesterday's blackie just proves to me that I can still find them.:pI know the rush of shooting a large carnivore and I also know the rush of not shooting when you got him dead to rights too.;)

303... Your right, passing up a game animal is very satisfying... When I was younger, I would blast everything I had a licence to... With age comes a mellowing and sometimes passing on the animal is as enjoyable as harvesting it!!!

Nice story by the way, thanks for taking the time to tell us!

Cheers
Jay

I have had more than a dozen in the crosshairs this year and about 3x that number in the binos. Just as much of a rush as taking one. Nice to see you are at least getting out there

Great reminder John. In the off season I love to head out with the big fat camera and go find the Rams or anything else that crosses my path.
It's great exersize and a roll of film is cheaper than the taxidermist!

I love going out chasing bears. Frankly, killing a bear in our parts with a rifle is no great accomplishment. Spotting and stalking to with in bow range is more fun but these days with the "must remove all edible portions", regulations I have no interest in killing one. I'm not interested in eating these animals who's closest relative is the racoon or dog. I don't like the smell and flavour of the meat. Worm's gross me out!

Spring sure is a great time to be out and enjoy the rebirth of the forest.

I'd shoot one if I had to in a clear cut case of Self defence, but the idea of having to clean one out, or eat them doesn't appeal to me much.

Briuns

Theres a 40 acre field across the road from my house. Its nice to see them(2 this year) at all hours of the day. They never cross the road, always staying close to the base of the mountain. I must be mellowing out, 30 years ago they would be framed in the crosshairs, not binos.
