Bears !!

Unfortunately it is against the law to have an unencased, loaded firearm on your person after dark in Ontario... hence the belt knife and someone tagging along behind me with a guncase... truth be told, if it was not a clear "blood lung" trail (where I was sure that I was tracking a bear that would be found dead on arrival), some rule bending may have gone on... ;)

I didn't know it was against the law to have a loaded firearm after dark in Ontario. That's kind of when I would want a loaded gun in the wilderness. I have to read up on that. Thanks for mentioning it. Is that in the Firearms Act?

Coon hunters legally carry loaded and uncased firearms after dark during the hide season in Ontario.

That is an exception with specific stipulations... You must be licenced to hunt coons at night (+small game permit) and you must be accompanied by a dog licenced for coon hunting in Ontario and you may only use rimfire rifles of a power known as .22 long rifle... very specific parameters... doesn't help much with a bear.

I actually shot this one 2 days into the season. I was baiting for a buddy that has never shot one. Was in the haliburton highlands area. 9xs out of 10 I never took a gun with me to bait. However was on my dads land and he said there was a nasty bore around that fake charged him on the bike. I laughed at him as I thought he was pulling my leg.
I took his advice.
I had a wary feeling eyes were upon me walking down the trail to the bait I did my business piled the last rock on the pile as I stood up there he was. On the path I just walked down. The only path out.
I though k this sucks for 2 reasons. I am going to screw my buddy's hunt up and I likely chased bears off of this bait for a week.
I made my self big and chucked a rock he was 40 yards at this point.
Seemed to back down until I took 10 steps up. Teeth and jaw was popping and growling.
I thought great. What does he want. The bait pile ? That was logical.

I tried to go around and found myself in thicker brush but to no avail I determined this bear was pissed at the world and I am pissing him off more. I decided u ignorant bugger. I have the gun. So back at the bait pile I was And loaded my dads 300 wsm and said. Had enough so I picked up my pail and beat it. He ran about 15 yards ahead of me and stopped. Popped his jaw again and this Time he stood up. Started bouncing pushing his feet into the ground and full out charged me.

I hit him the first in the chest head on at 15 yards. And rolled him ! He got up and I hit him the second in mid body as he was crawling away I hit him the 3rd and the old bastard gave a death growl grown that would put the fear of god into you.

This was the first bear I had to shoot. I have been baiting many years. Seen many stupid things. But I was afraid with this old bugger.
