Our cottage has a real issue with beavers- one just about took out our hydro lines when it felled a tree that landed on the wires. Last year about 17 of the rodents were 'harvested' in the area.

So in the best 'beaver defense' thread tradition... What do I drop 'em with? Thinking .22 hi velocity.

It is my understanding that I can do this because they're being destructive on my property but if someone can confirm, thanks. We're in the 'city of kawartha lakes'

.22 around water? NEVER

They've felled stuff on our lot then dragged it across the road, anther property and into the river.

So it is probably a long shot I' d catch them in the act and be able to do something about it.

I figure I'll most likely deal with it with a .22 RF if it comes to that. It's funny, after much deliberation with myself am selling my mini-14 because it's an unfired safe queen... and this is an example of where it would probably be an excellent tool for the job.

If they have a dam nearby blast it. Place a 50 pound charge of of dynamite or an emulsion based explosive at 5' intervals at the center on the deep water side of the dam, and allow the charges to sink to the bottom. Initiate with detonating cord attached to a booster in each charge, and the force of the water will do the rest. Any beavers that survive the blast can be taken with a .22 centerfire when they come to repair the dam. Proceed carefully if there are properties down stream that might be damaged by the increased flow of water.
