I just received a Boyd's Tacticool stock for my Savage Mk II heavy barrel and would like to bed it. I have never done this before but have been doing some reading to hopefully familiarize myself with the process.

I just took my Mk II out of it's factory (also a Boyd's stock) stock and have confirmed that it will drop into the Tacticool once Savage sends me the correct action screws and trigger guard.

Here's my problem. The channel in the stock that everything fits into it quite thin and snug. Also, being that it's a 22Lr the barrel and action aren't very wide either. There just doesn't seem like a whole lot of surface to apply bedding compound onto apart from the edges of the stock. The underside of the action is actually quite crowded with bolts etc.

The other problem is that there are no pillars built into the stock.

Suggestions?

Wow, good read ... thanks for that! I think adding pillars with be a bit ambitious so I'll just do the "part one". The only thing I'm confused about is that there are several references to a recoil lug. Unless I'm blind, I don't see a recoil lug on my Mk II.

Might be a difference between your rifle, and the one Ron AKA is bedding. If you check out post #50 to #53 in the linked article:

Someone asks the same question. Nice pictures of two rifles, one with, and one without a recoil lug.

Suggest a base line test to see where you are at. If you are shooting .5groups at 50m you may do more harm by fiddling. It may be better to manage tune by torquing the action screws. I found this to work with my rig which is the same as yours.

I considered bedding the contact points only on each pillar with a skim coat. I think it nearly impossible to bed the action with all the gadgets in place on this model.

The Mk II was shooting groups down into the .3" range with no bedding in the old stock, I just got the parts from Savage so will put it together and test it to see the results. Torquing the screws may be an idea. There are no pillars on my Mk II so don't think I can do any skim coating.
