Was at the Canadian Tire store (Rocky Mountain House, AB) yesterday. I noted they had a few beginner rifle packages in stock:

1) Winchester XPR with a 3-9 Vortex scope. Also 2 clips - $725.99. (.270 Win)
2) Browning X-Bolt with a 3-9 Leupold VX 2 - About $1000.00 (.30-06, 7mm Mag, and .300 Mag)
3) Savage Axis Camo bull barrel ( Accutrigger) with a 3-9 Bushnell - Between $800.00 and $910.00 (.308 Win, .243, and .22-250)

I realize these are not the top end rifle and scope models, but perhaps great for a beginner. Are these prices reasonable

BTW, that place is impressive for a CT. Large variety of rifles (including Kimber, MOA Evolution package with Nightforce scope, Montana, Fierce, Blaser, Ruger Precision...to name a few), shotguns, scopes, and so forth. And they actually have experienced Hunting Pro Shop staff working there...including weekends. Not bad at all.

The Browning (composite?) in .30-06 will be a good beginner package. Has a good scope on it. Price is reasonable.

I ought to add, if you are shopping for a cost efficient rig that will deliver accuracy with most factory ammo across the shelf then it would be a good idea to look at the Tikka T3 or Weatherby Vanguard S2 and buy the scope/mount extra. Reason I say this, based on personal experience with two Brownings (only) both rifles were finicky with ammo - opinions may vary in this regard..

That'd be the Axis2 if outfitted with the Accu-trigger iirc.

I have one of them in .243 with the 20" (youth) for the gf. And it's plenty accurate for our needs. And thats outfitted with the factory 'Weaver' 3-9x

I doubt you'd want the buy a hunting rifle with a heavy bbl. It'll get heavy eventually. And for that cost...with what else you've found....
In that list, I'd go with the winchester in .270

You didn't mention you absolutly want to purchase from there so I'll go ahead and say I think there are a couple of better options at cheaper prices elsewhere.

As mentionned, bull barrel is a terrible idea for hunting and an Axis II combo with scope is $560 at cabelas...

Check the site sponsors especially with the fathers day specials coming and if you can't find what you are looking for checkout cabelas or wholesalesports...

The Axis is considered a beginner or budget rifle by most (but you gotta pay the right price), I don't know the XPR enough so i can't say but the x-bolt is far from an entry level rifle. And with vx-2 for 1K, this is a really good deal.

My advise to beginners is hunt with a mentor and borrow until you know if you like the sport and what you want, then buy once, cry once and get the best you can afford that suits your needs.

you will save a ton of money this way and only have what you really want/need.

I did it all backwards and paid a lot for it, so I know what I am talking about. spending the least or most amount to get the job done is only rewarded and frowned upon by the the truly ignorant IMO

Well I like the axis but at that price I would choose something else. Go online and see some prices from cabelas or wss. They ship firearms. Like stated above there are Father's Day deals running right now you may find something more appealing.

2) Browning X-Bolt with a 3-9 Leupold VX 2 - About $1000.00 (.30-06, 7mm Mag, and .300 Mag)
Of the three you mention, the Browning is the best deal and the scope would not have to be replaced down the road.

I suggest the 30/06 if you are a new shooter. A magnum might be a a bit much recoil and expensive to shoot.

I just picked up a Ruger American in 270Win - it came with a Redfield scope, and I also got a case for it. Since then I bought some lens covers for the scope as well as a bipod from Amazon - still under $1000 for everything

Sighted it in within 5 rounds.

As a total newbie to hunting, I'm pretty happy with my purchase, and see it doing everything I need it to for the next several years. With that said, I can see myself going down the rabbit hole down the track with higher end stuff haha
