HI-JACK: I have a chrome lined 8mm mauser barrel. Are you building from scratch or are you reaming an exsisting 8mm barrel? I'm torn between rechambering this new barrel or???? I would love to shoot cheap ammo.
There are a couple schools of thought for this project.
The problem with chrome lined is that it will destroy the chamber reamer, and since they are worth several 100 bucks, you won't save much money doing that.
I have an old 8mm mauser barrel that I considered turning down and pinning in to a bored out .308 1919 barrel. But that project will have to wait.
You basically have two options: You can order a 8mm barrel blank from bits and pieces in BC or you can go through the hassles of importing one from the US. I won't discuss which way I went.
The barrel blanks are listed as 1-1/4 inches, so it will turn to the proper size without a problem. Length is plenty fine too, and they are not chrome lined. You would also have to turn the threads, and have the adjusting notches machined in.
I am picking my barrel up this morning, so hopefully will have a couple hundred rounds through it by the end of the weekend. I have a pile of over 21,000 rounds sitting in the garage now, all on belts.
I know there are other guys wanting these barrels. Perhaps, after getting permission from the mods, a group buy, either made in Canada or imported from the US, could be arranged. If this works out, I wouldn't mind a second barrel. Of course, that means I would have to buy another 20,000 rounds too.
When you think about it, If a barrel ended up costing $400, you would be ahead of the game after just 2,000 rounds as opposed to shooting .308.
I have no doubt I will regret only having bought as many rounds as I have. Mind you, if I had bought more than 21,000 I think the honda would have lost an axle bringing it home.
