About how many guys in NS are into somewhat serious benchrest shooting? (not talking necessarily the fanciest benchrest rig but also not just plain hunting rifles)
We don't seem to have any range remotely set up for it that I know of and we don't come up online when searching the benchrest activity in this country, but surely there's a few guys around here into it?

thanks

Contact the Nova Scotia Provincial Rifle Association. They have a 1000yd range at Bull Meadows. Don't know if they have benches or not.

The "West Pictou Wildlife Association" has a 25,50,100, and 200 yds. rifle range and benches. The benches aren't exactly the best made but are adequate. You'll definitely want to bring your own front & rear rests as they just have simple sand bags and the odd block of wood for support. It's generally a well kept range.

There's no programs or formalized shooting except for the odd friendly club shoot.

I'm hoping to see if there's enough guys around into it to maybe make things a little more interesting.

Bull Meadows is a beautiful range, but 800meter is prone, 100meter has the benches. I'm not a member there yet but should send the form soon, been trying to figure out if I can survive shooting prone(sternum issues), and I'm still not sure when the guys practice there or how it all works.

I had the idea there's no long range benchrest anywhere in Canada, or is there? all I found is 100-300meter.
(I suppose the guys in places where they can shoot on their property could do it, but not NS :( )

I'm just getting into it, but really love it so far. I'm a member of the Atlantic Marksman Association and we have a 100, 200 & 280 meter range that have bench rests to shoot from, butnothing longer... I'd love to shoot at the 800 meter range at Bull Meadows, but memberships there are CRAZY expensive.

If you're thinking of having some sort of local competition, I'd probably shoot in that...

How often do you shoot on the rifle range? I asked Sean Hansen about the rifle ranges and he'd indicated that they were an after thought and AMA was a handgun club - not a rifle club.

Form I got here says 285 for the first 4yrs then its only $85/yr, I think its very reasonable for such a nice and superbly well maintained range(bull meadows).

I do look forward to the 300 and 400M at MVRRC as well :)

I shoot at the outdoor rifle range every Saturday morning. The rifle range is definatly smaller than the handgun, but still very nice. We have a building to shoot out of that has a wood stove for heat in the winter.

So is it $285 PER YEAR for the first 4 years, or is it $285 one time that covers the first 4 years?

Can you send me that form?

285/yr for the first 4, I'll send you the link to the form on their site.

In the summer I'll try to go every week or 2 if weather is good, I try to shoot on week days whenever possible with my schedule.

Any more guys in NS doing the precision/benchrest stuff?

NSRA charges each new member an $800 equity surcharge, (payable over the first 4 years of your membership) plus an $85 per year annual membership.

If you choose to pay the $800 upfront, then you're clear for the $85 per year.

AMA charges $100 incorporation fee to the club, and (currently) $150 per year membership.

I just ran the math on it, and currently, the "break even" point is your 11th year. (IE, if you're a member of NSRA for 11 years, it will be cheaper than being a member of AMA for 11 years.

* OF NOTE, I AM A MEMBER AT BOTH *

That said....suppose AMA's annual membership were to go to...say...$175 a year....what does that do to the numbers...Your "break even" point shifts to 8 years.

Both clubs have very good, very active shooters in both rifle and handgun. AMA tends to have more handgun shooters, and has lots of IPSC stuff on the go. NSRA tends to have more rifle shooters, with active Target rifle, Service rifle sections, and runs a very good PPC pistol match each year.

I'm happy to pay the price of admission to both clubs. They both have their niches, and my shooting disciplines cross-over into both clubs.

That said, NSRA's range is a 35 minute drive from my house, and the AMA's outdoor range is a 14 minute drive.

20 minutes of gas saved on a trip to the range twice a month (or more) adds up quite quickly....which is one of the reasons I don't go to MVRRC, as it's a 45 minute drive from my house (ish)

The extra cost of the AMA membership (long term) is made worthwhile because of the savings in gas, and the availability of the indoor range in all weather conditions.

YMMV, both clubs have good aspects...and when it comes down to it, the dollars and cents in the long term are pretty much even.

I'd be interested in this too. That's my sole purpose for buying my 223. It's an 8 twist Stainless Tikka Varmint. I got the 100 yd load down good, and now, I just working on the 200 yd load developement.
So far out of 40 test rounds, I had 2 - 5 shot groups just under an inch @ 200 yds.

I used to be a member of the NSRA back in the days too early 80's to 90's....back when Bull Meadows was just being built. We had a couple of pistol ranges, and a 100 yard range.
Shot there and shot a lot at the AMA with Ralph Dunn and Ricky, and also at the Halifax Armouries.

Back then, Bob Sirtonski was the prez of the HG section. Did some IPSC...had a helluva time whenever we shot. Great fun!!

Right about the same time we started a young family and I started my long distance trucking career. Hard to play with my guns when I was gone 300 days out of the year !! ;( sooo everything got put on the back burner...life kinda got in the way !
I sold off all my HG's cept for one...my 12(6)...getting back into some of it again ..the last ten or twelve years!

Fast forward 25 + years.....I've been a member at MVRRC for the past10 + yrs. I love the club...some great members, bit of sporting clays, some HG and lots of rifle. Got my youngest daughter into it...rifles and S-Clays.
I really hope we get our 400 M range up and running this year. Can't wait to see what my old eyes are capable of...then again..I may be disappointed ... :D
