Just wondering why the Benelli M2 Tactical doesn't seem to be discussed much. I've passed my PAL/RPAL course ...just waiting for my application to be processed and have been looking at auto black shotguns. I can read posts about the M4 all day and there's a fair amount of feedback for the Mossberg 930 too....but almost nothing about the M2.

Is it not a popular shotgun ? I thought a cheaper than M4 would have more of a following.

Anyway...would love to hear some opinions on this firearm if anyone out there has one or knows a bit about this model.

Thanks in advance

Its a great gun "I owned one before my M4"

M2 Pro"s

-Light weight
-fast handling
-reliable
-quality is Exc.
-can ghost load "you must mod the bolt carrier"
-simple operating system
-great sights

Con's
-few good stock options
-does not come with sight rail
-plastic trigger mech
-shell latch can catch finger when loading

when you say plastic trigger mech....do you mean the internal mechanics...or that the actual trigger / trigger guard are plastic ?

Pretty surprised to hear that they'd use plastic trigger parts on a $1600 plus shotgun.

How did it shoot ? Was the recoil relatively light considering it's an semi-auto ? Think at 18.5 it'd be usable at all for trap/skeet ? Hope I'm not asking stupid questions....I have yet to actually shoot a firearm since my cadet days with a .22 rifle....30 years ago !

Thanks for the feedback !

It has a polymer trigger guard "every thing else is metal"

Shot great "feed the cheapo wally ammo 100%" The Recoil is hard and no different then any pump shotgun. If you want a soft shooting semi then go with a gas operating one "M4".

The M2 is tremendously popular with LawEnforcement, being Interia driven its a very clean operating system that theyve mastered to a science to say the least, yes its not an accessory whore like other shotguns out there, but in all honesty it doesnt need to be in my opinion :D

I cannot say if the tactical model has the pict. rail on the top of the receiver, Im certain it does (like the SuperNova's etc) but cant confirm that... Id opt for the ghost ring model some day in the future hopefully...

yeah....was looking at the ghost ring option. Would that ruin it for trap/skeet ?

Love mine. Ran the Tactical Response course courses flawlessly last summer. It was crazy accurate with slugs hitting the steel plates out at 100 yards. I'd say the recoil is less than the 870's I've tried. The pistol grip is great but doesn't fit in my scabbard so I'm looking for a Comfortech stock without the grip. I like the ghost ring sights but I do have a Mesa Tactical shell holder with a rail and a Vortex Razor waiting to be mounted.

Probably the length of the barrel will be a bigger drag on your accuracy.

too bad about the trigger guard...does the M4 have a metal guard ?

If the trigger guard can survive the Fighting Shotgun classes of Tactical Response, and it did, then I wouldn't worry about it. Glocks have way more plastic and they don't break too often.

Good point on the length of the barrel....but I'll have to deal with it I guess.

Also good point about the trigger guard, just a bit of a hang-up...when paying that much I expected metal....but since I'm planning on a XDM 9mm to go with it who am I to be #####ing about plastic ;)

Now if we just had a few pics of some sweet M2's maybe this could turn into an official M2 thread !

Here's one going through the paces at said Tactical Response course. The late, great Paul Gomez presiding over the event. We were to move back from concealment while retaining cover and getting sight of several targets from different positions and vantage points hand loading buck or slug depending on distance. I highly recommend the shotgun rig from SOE.

you guys look like you mean business :shotgun:

Hey THX,
What was your round count in that class? We did about 550 combined at FS here.

Steve

I have no idea. Would that be 550 for two days? Because I'm pretty sure it was more than that for 4 days along with hundreds of rounds of pistol ammo. I had an ammo can that I kept dumping the contents of god knows how many boxes, and I would just grab as much as I could every chance I had between huge gulps of water to keep that rig loaded. 40 rounds on that chest rig and it'd be empty by the end of that exercise.

Shooting five rounds of 12 ga as fast as you can pull the trigger is such a rush. No more pumps for me.

Best time I've had in forever. I need more of that!

Anyway the M2 looks dainty compared to the M4 but the M4s there were hefty. I really appreciated that lightness on those days and not one failure.

Yes, just for the two day Fighting Shotgun. They didn't have Advanced at the time.

Best class I've ever taken from TR, by a long ways.

I think the M2 is in some ways a better shotgun than the M4 but it lacks the latter's presentation and "mojo", giving the impression that it's cheaper than its pricetag.

I think I'm mostly trying to decide between the the "cheap" route for my first shotgun, a Mossberg 930, and going "quality" with the M2. I have almost always found that quality tends to cost less in the long run...just have to swallow the increased upfront cost.

But I'm really new to firearms...maybe a Mossberg 930 would run flawlessly for just as long as the M2...I don't know. That's why I'm deferring to you guys for advice.

As always...really appreciate the input

The Mossberg 930 is the poor mans M2 ;)

Ethier would be a good choice "Benelli will look better"

Here's a question:

For someone with an M2 fields version. Am I better served getting a tactical barrel and the receiver drilled and tapped for the iron sights, or picking up an M4 in the long run?

buy either used on the EE and save yourself some bucks. Personally i'd go with a pump 590 or SUpernova or the 930 JM Edition but those are my tastes.
