Is a full length mag tube, plugged to pacify the Canadian suits (5 rounds in mag), legal? It would be kind of like plugging your 18" 870 Police in order to go duck hunting.
I just hate so much that the BM4 comes with that silly crimped mag tube extension thingy.

** I am not touching on the legality of purchasing/acquiring this full-length mag tube, so please stick to the topic. And please do not answer unless you know for sure, or else this topic will turn into a 35 page debate about what the price of bread is on Mars.

I doubt a CO will ask you to take apart the shotgun. He/she will ask you to load up the tube and that will be proof enough, if even required.

A magazine designed for a semi auto shotgun that can hold more than five rounds is a prohibited device. A non permanent dowel or plug may satisfy hunting regs, but not the criminal code requirements. Permanent generally means some kind of tools needed to removed the limiting device ie. a rivet in a AR or pistol mag.

If you were to epoxy your dowel into the mag tube or press a tight fitting chunk of aluminum into the tube you'd be GTG.

Just FYI...

Here are the FRT numbers for a Non-restricted Benelli M4s:

117673-1 (4 Shot, 470mm Barrel)
117673-3 (5 Shot, 470mm Barrel)
117673-2 (6 Shot, 470mm Barrel)

All are non-restricted and 3" chambers...

Strange. Mine is the standard M4 Super 90 which holds 5x 2.75" in the tube. I thought that was max allowed in non-rest semi-auto shotguns?

Me too but they have a number for a Benelli M4 with a 3" chamber that has a 6 shot capacity.

Legally, in a gun with a 3" chamber, you may have a magazine that holds 5.9 3" rounds. As long as a 6th 3" round does not fit, you are good to go. That means your semi-automatic Benelli M4 can legally hold 6 x 2 3/4" shells + a ghost round + one in the chamber.

Here's a link to the email from the techs on this subject:

I will investigate how there can be an FRT# for a 6 shot Benelli M4 with 3" chamber. I just found this info out today.

I dug up my box and receipt and manual, and nowhere are the above #s shown.

That means your semi-automatic Benelli M4 can legally hold 6 x 2 3/4" shells + a ghost round + one in the chamber.

But we all know that you can only fit 5x 2.75" shells in the mag, one in the chamber and a ghost round, equalling a grand total of 7x 2.75" shells.
And only 4x 3" shells fit in the mag, one in chamber and a ghost = 6x 3" shells.

The numbers posted by angryeyebrows are FRT (firearms reference table) numbers not product codes from Benelli. You wont find them on the box.

Wow  That pic deserves to be quoted...

This might be a little off topic... But I don't remember any CO ever checking capacity... The only two question I ever heard of are
- Is this gun unloaded?
- Is you hunting license valid?

OK. The FRT you want to have is 117673-3 which is the 5 shot, 3" chamber, 470mm barrel, non-restricted. This way you can install a full length tube and limit it to 5.9 rounds of 3", which will give you the maximum magazine space legally allowed and thus the maximum number for shorter shells.

The other FRT with the 6 shot is just because the gun is out there with that as a factory option. Does not make it legal to possess.

Now we really need to find some of Carrier Comp full length Titanium mag tubes. As for limiting it, would it be feasible to permanently attach a plug to the end of the magazine cap? This would allow you to still strip for cleaning and cause the least amount of damage to the gun.

I agree that would be the best way to do it as it would be a one piece tube. I didn't think of that before.

I drilled out the hole in my extension, placed a carrier bolt and locktited a 2" nut on it inside the tube (with the bolt properly sized to limit the capacity to 5x 3" shells)

It's permanent enough and relatively unobtrusive.

With the Benelli factory +2 extension (not the crimped one), you can simply remove the spring retaining clip from the end of your mag tube, flip it around backward and push it all the way to the front of the +2 extension tube where it will butt up against the tapered end where the mag cap screws on. JB weld or the like can be used to permanently install it. With this method the magazine capacity is 5 rounds of 3" and 6 rounds of 2 3/4". Totally invisible to the outside.
