As an inexperienced shooter looking to expand my collection, I'm turning my attention away from rimfire and would like to break into the world or shotguns in the next few months.

Now, I seem to only be interested in super old and very cool classic designs - break action double and o/u. Or very modern military esque. With these considerations, I am also looking for versatile. I want something that I can shoot trap, skeet, and maybe even slugs. I REALLY like the M4, and I think I always have, but never knew what it was until a couple years ago. If I were to get one, would it be plausible for all aforementioned purposes? If so or not, please let me know why. Also! Where a good place to get one online. I'm just doing my research for now and will be looking to buy my first shotgun in a few months time.

I do know it is 'recommended' people usually get a 870 or 500 for their first shotgun, but these limit me in their pump action, which would eliminate the prospect of skeet, would it not?

If I get serious about either sport, ill obviously refine my selection afterwards and expand my collection once again. For now, just looking for an all arounder and would really hope the M4 gets the people with experiences blessing :)

Benelli m4 was my first shotgun and I have "done it all" with from plinking/trap/skeet/3gun, it is truly an amazing machine.

Can't go wrong with it.

More than good enough for me. Now, where did you get yours? I guess I'm wondering which dealer would have one cause I don't see any used for sale and the dealer sites I've checked seem to be only traditional hunting style firearms.

If you have the cash go for it !!

I have used the M4 and loved it "it is heavy though"

The M2 tactical is really nice too "which I own"

Not at all. Pumpguns might not be optimal skeet guns, but neither is a Benelli M4. Prior to semiautos becoming more popular, pumps were commonly used for skeet. For what you would spend on the M4, you could get a old 870 Wingmaster, accesorize as you wish, and buy extra barrels for specific requirements (eg. short barrel for slugs/three gun/general fun; long barrel for trap and skeet) while having money left over.

The M4 is a well built shotgun.

It is a bit on the heavy side in terms of them, but once the gun is broken in, you will not have problems with malfunctions. It is a very good do all gun for most of the things shotguns can be used for.

The M2 is also a very good shotgun, but the M4 just tickled my fancy a little more. I still enjoy shooting mine whenever I can.

I have an 870 express and i've shot a bunch of skeep trap 5 stand sporting clays you name it. i've never felt that the pumping action slowed me down. in fact i borrowed an 1100 and tried a few rounds of skeet with it and i actually did worse. I'm also not very good and don' claim to be, i'm just sharing my experiences. I don't feel as though a pump held me back.

That said, if you like te M4 and can afford one go nuts! It's your money and if you like the gun you'll shoot it more and therefore get better.

Or lube the hell out of it :)

My lube up M2 runs 100% even with the cheapo winchester shells

Although I've not used it for any kind of formal competition, I would be surprised if you were disappointed with the m4. Worth every penny in my opinion.

I don't think the M4 would classify as a good trap/skeet gun, though it could be used for that I suppose.
For its intended uses, it's a great gun, though I don't think that was ever "sporting purposes".
I had an M4 and it looked great and fired flawlessly, albeit heavy, as others mentioned. What bothered me is that you're limited to the one barrel. That's the reason I bought an M2 with slug bbl and 26" choked bbl for hunting.
If all you're doing is shooting at a range or destroying stuff, then the M4 is great. :D

Its really more about the sights than anything else. Ghost rings or rifle sights aren't ideal for the clay games. An M4 with a bead or fibre optic would work just dandy. You can do it with ghost rings, but it is sort of a handicap.

Yes, the M4 does really like running wet.

The M4s90 was my first centerfire long gun, and I haven't regretting even a TEENY bit about getting it probably 4 years ago now. Awesome shotgun, and very capable.

The ghost sights aren't all that great for clays, but you can definitely learn to use them. Once you get used to the slightly narrower FOV they work good at shooting clays, and you can use them for EVERYthing else too. Hunting (slugs and buck) birds, target shooting etc...

Jack of all trades but a master of none comes to mind. Generally ppl asking for a "do all gun" comprimise in all aspects of it such will be the case with this gun as with any. However if i were to pick a do all gun, and having tried and used the M4 for jsut such a purpose (hunting plinking trap etc) and done fine (not exceptional but held my own and watched others to the same with it). I would recommend this shotgun IF you have the cash for it. It is an exceptional shotgun and will serve you well.
