The T97 is basically a civilian version of a modern communist military's adopted rifle, built by that communist country's factorys, that also pump out the rifle used by the military.

The AK is a communist military's adopted rifle, built by a communists country's factories....

The SKS is a similiar platform....

The Benelli is a niche rifle that sells when you can't use an AR or..... an AK.

You see what I'm saying here? That's how I see it......

I'm considering getting an MR1. In doing some initial research I am finding a great deal of conflicting information as to wether or not it is designed for 5.56 NATO.

Also, if it is designed for 5.56, can it run .223 ?

Please share your thoughts,

RF

I've run both .223 and 5.56 in my MR-1 and it's been fine. It is a reliable beast that runs very clean.

In these days, it is nice to have a non-restricted, reliable, semiauto that takes AR mags. Trigger lock it and throw it behind the seat of your truck and you are compliant with the regs. I'm not a go fast guy and my Benelli is kind of a "jack of all trades, have it with you when you're travelling" kinda rig.

I have shot my brothers T97 and I liked it but it's ergos were as different as the MR-1's.

The Accurange reticle 2x7 is zeroed at 100 yards and is QD, the OEM aperture sights are zeroed at 50 yards and the red dot is zeroed at 25 yards.

I have 25 LAR mags for it so it makes for a dandy rifle.

Of the two, I'd go Benelli. Have fondled both and tho the T97 gets the nod for ergos, the Benelli would win out for overall build quality etc.

Not too long ago I did a similar comparison between the MR1 and the HK SL8. Brought home the SL8 and really like it. In that type of scenario, it'd be my go to.

Thank you, yes I had previously read that thread.

What I'm wondering is what the MR1 is designed, by Benelli, to shoot. Is it 556 or 223?

Nice rig GEO !

5.56 nato is what its designed for. Also i believe but could be wrong that Beretta designed the MR1 not Benelli. Benelli just manufacturers and sells it as their own. The MR1 is based off the Beretta RX4 Storm wich never made it to retail sale.

A couple of my grandkids are still very active with my MR1, this rifle when i gave it was all ready north of 5K rounds on it with nothing broke and 5 failures max du to the operator or the ammo, i dont recall one real gun related failure, according to my grandkids, none happened since they use it...
Great rifle with ordinary ergonomics but after one afternoon with the rifle, i forgot about the ergonomics forever... JP.

Okay, excellent. That is also confirmed by some of my more recent research, including a 2009 Media Release from Beretta.

I would post it but can't figure out how.

Thanks to all!

Would be a tough choice. My experience with the T97 was good. It's a compact, very simple rifle, and was perfectly reliable for me before I sold mine. I have no experience with the Benelli, though I'm certain it would be a higher quality firearm, I'd probably still take the T97 going off your list of criteria.
The T97 is not particularly optics friendly or customizable unless you do the FTU, but if we're talking SHTF I think the KISS principle is best anyways. Its iron sights get the job done, it's certainly combat accurate. Being a bullpup it's naturally handy at going from close range/vehicle scenarios to longer range. It's ergonomics are a weak point, but are certainly useable with practice. Cost wise it definitely wins out over the Benelli, meaning you can afford more ammo.
End of the day though I would take my AR or Tavor before either of these rifles.

Keep in mind that one could buy the FTU and irons to make an equal price point between the units. The be Nellie is nice too be sure, but the t97 seems more bullet proof. And possibly more fun in the end; ironing the minor kinks as one goes.

The be Nellie seems to be stuck with sights as "upgrades" go: thoroughly boring in my books.
