Hey There.

I'm fairly new to hunting and firearms. My son and I are both just getting into it.

I'm saving up for an auto, but my son likes pumps. We found this used Benelli Nova below at triggers and bows in Brantford Ontario.

He is thinking of purchasing it (or rather me purchasing it, and it will be 'his' gun to use). He is 13, but big for his age (He is like 5' 10" and 150lbs).

It would be general purpose shotgun. Nothing specific, but would like to know that it can be used to take a deer.

I do not know the barrel length yet.

Any input on this gun and it's price would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

im no gun expert, however i have read that some of these forends are pretty loose, and replacement barrels are $$$$$$$$$

since your son is young, maybe you can show him a rem 870? they can be had for cheaper, and barrels etc are pretty cheap.... and if he wants to outfit one with all sorts of tactical gear he can drain your wallet with the 870 too!!!!

a nice example of an 870: a cgn members gun

that is about the going rate for one in very good shape .but i would be looking at the rem 870 combo three barrel set .if you are going to be hunting in ont ,they come with a slug barrel for deer a short barrel for turkeys and a longer vent rib barrel for ducks and geese and all for about the same money mosberg also has a great combo gun .and that store had them on sale last time i was there .the mosberg is what i shot i have a 21inch barrel for turkeys and a rifled slug barrel for deer great gun for the price.and it fit me much bettewr then the nova.a super nova might be worth that much but not to me very happy with my mossberg DUTCH check them all out before picking one

there are lots of different companies that offer pump action shotguns. you could always bring your son to some gunshops and shoulder a few different ones to see what fits well for him. he probably doesn't care as long as he gets a gun!!!! there's always the mossburg 3 barrel combos in both model 500 and 835's for the same price your going to pay for a benelli nova or browning bps. you'll also get the whole you should get a remmy 870 vs. whatever. but that's like comparing ford vs. chevy. my personal belief is that the gun should fit you well and be comfortable.

That is a pretty good deal. Location is a bit far for me though.

Thanks all for the input......

We did look at some mossberg combos. I was not real impressed with the feel of the gun to be honest. I've yet to go handle this Nova though....

I'll look into these 870 combos a well.

Any more input us still appreciated.

Too far?

Try $30 shipping and no PST.

that's what i was getting at. you only pay one tax out of province plus shipping. should equal the same as paying both taxes in same province. but price is no substitute for fit and feel of the gun. have fun shopping. i always do........:sniper:

there was one on the ee going for 425 with the 24" barrel. i have a used one comming from back east with 28" barrel, i payed 400. at 525 i would be looking at new ones for a $40 difference. i can't comment on the shotgun, but i have handled one in a local store and they seem pretty nice...i'll wait till i get it out in the field till i give a review.

Looks like new would be a better way to go (for this deal anyway).

I'll handle the one in a local shop, and then see about ordering and shipping. Only concern there is that if there is any defect on the one shipped, it is more difficult to resolve issue then of purchased local.....

You won't find much to complain about a Nova... I have one since their introduction, it follows me everywhere from mud to water and never fails...
This is a perfect wetland shotgun.

The asked selling amount is wayy too much. When first introduced, in 1999, it was selling around 725.00 $, but as others pointed out, you can get it now for less than 525.00 $, brand new.

Mine never fit me right and would reward me with a painfull recoil. I have shot lots of 3" slugs and other heavy recoil rounds out of other shotguns, but the Benelli just wasn't for me.
To bad, it is one of the best built shotguns that I have owned.

I don't own a Nova, but I bought one for my wife (a 20 ga youth), and she likes it quite a bit, however it does seem to demonstrate a pronounced recoil for a 20. The fit, finish and quality of the gun however are excellent for a working gun.

Just remember that shooting deer with a shotgun, you better be in thick brush with short distances. You can hunt with 12 gauge slugs to maybe 75 yards, 100 tops but the accuracy starts to degrade pretty quick as does the drop.

Any 12 gauge shotgun is good for deer, but you better be close.

I owned the Nova and the Supernova and they are both great...but the Nova hits hard with recoil. That can be reduced by an optional mercury recoil tube and bracket which fits in the stock. However, for the extra cost you can buy the upgraded Supernova, which has the comfortech stock and recoil is minimal. No mercury recoil tube required or optional. It also has shims for drop and cast adjustment of the stock. The recoil itube adds nearly a pound to the Nova. Even Benelli must have realized the Nova needed a bit of an upgrade or they would have left the Nova alone without the upgraded Supernova (I would think). Just my opinion.

Functionally, the Nova is an excellent shotgun. But for deer and birds, I'd go with an 870 combo instead, personally. They are available in very inexpensive combos with rifled barrels as well as 28" vent ribs, and you can buy an accessory pack with the IC and Full chokes and you're covered for most hunting situations, from little upland birds to black bear and deer out to 100-150 yards. 870 might not have the fit and finish or overall "feel" of the Benelli but it's plenty fine for most situations.

The Nova's for sale here have been less than that one. I had a nova for a while and sold it, the buttpad which isn't replaceable is hard as a rock, the gun looks to have a 28 inch barrel and the only deer barrel is cylinder and you use a rifled tube(not the best) and that gun is heavy (over 8 lbs).

I wouldn't have bopught one for my kid(now 20) at that age due to recoil and weight.

a lot of people are talking about recoil...has anyone tried an aftermarket recoil pad? why would a nova be any worse than a 870 or 500 shooting the same load?

I've ordered 2 guns from Dante's and am waiting on a 3rd. Both my guns were absolutely flawless and arrived super quick!! I don't think I need to deal with any other shop after the way they take care of their customers.
