Hi guys, I'm trying to figure out what's the best 12 gauge pump action shotgun at a decent price. I've pretty much narrowed it down to the 4 shotguns in the title. Which do you think is the best of the 4 overall? I'll be mostly skeet shooting.

The super Nova is built like a tank, and is chambered for 3.5" magnums (not sure if some of the other ones are or not).

The supernova compared to the rest are extremely corrosion resistant, just due to the polymer coated receiver, however compared to the rest the Nova's are quite a bit more expensive. Same thing with extra barrels, the 870's are VERY common getting new barrels, mossberg i'd say second place as for barrels.

I have one of the 14" Super Nova's with the tele stock and it's a fearsome little beast, I haven't put any 3.5's in it yet and am a bit hesitant to do so :p

Love Benellis, i have the Nova and SuperNova, love them both. Also have an 870 but she just sits in the safe and looks sad every time I open the door and grab my SuperNova.:D

Oh shoot, is there any way to switch this thread over? Or do I just make a new one?

just ask a mod - or change the title to 'plz move to Hunting and Sporting Shotguns'.

i dont shoot clays (some hand thrown now and then but that doesnt count), which is why i would not presume to give advice on a gun for them.
just saying that if you post here people will be recommending stuff like Mossberg 590s, folding stock 870s and 14" Benellis for skeet :)

youd get much better advice about a gun for clays in the Fudd forum - this is their bread and butter, after all :D

If you want a damn nice shotgun that doesnt come with factory flaws and need aftermarket parts to run right: get the Benelli. If you want a cheap hooker shotgun with a million accessories: get a remington or mossberg. If you dont want to fix it before you shoot it: Get a Benelli or Mossberg :D

Ive had

870 Police 14"
870 tac
winchester defender
Benelli nova
Benelli super nova 14"

my order of best to worst is..

Supernova
nova
870P
Defender
and WAY at the bottom 870 tac and every modern 870 (except wingmaster)

this is all subjective.

in pumps ive owned 870Ps, Wingmasters, Expresses, Grizzlies, Mossberg 500/590, Benelli Nova/Supernova, Ithaca 37 -- and i would rate the Nova/Supernova as the worst of all of them.

there is nothing in terms of fit/finish/function on a Benelli Nova/Supernova that is superior to an 870. the platform itself is far less versatile, and less ergonomic, than the 870 or even the 500 platforms. i always found them chubby, rattly and cheap-feeling.

but like i said, its all subjective: you need to go and handle one of each, and make up your mind for yourself.

Ya it does seem very subjective. The reason I'm asking this question though is because there aren't many stores around here that offer these shotguns. Usually I'll research whatever type of firearm I'm looking for, narrow it down to 3 or 4, and then go try them out in the store. But in this case I've only seen the Benelli supernova and the cheap 870 express. So if I have to order online I want as many opinions as possible.

So the 870 wingmaster is different from all the other terrible modern 870's?
I don't want to end up getting a wingmaster and realizing its as badly made as the express.

despite what people would have you believe, there is no functional difference between an 870 Express, Wingmaster, Police, or even a DA Grizzly.
Wingmasters are polished and gloss blued, Expresses are rougher machined and matte blued, Police are parkerized and supposedly built in a separate part of the plant with tighter quality control, Grizzlies are made in China by evil communist child labourers.
none of them have failed to go BANG so far. the Wingmasters and Police are smoother but they will ALL break in and smooth up over time.

the Grizzly posted is from the very first batch - they are slightly rougher now, but still better than an Express.

as ive said before, think of the 870 Express/Grizzly as Craftsman or Mastercraft wrenches, and Wingmaster/Police as SnapOn. if you want to pay the extra premium for something better finished and with more pride of ownership, then by all means. either will remove bolts just fine.

as for people b*tching about the decline in quality of Remington, Marlin, etc - it happens. people want cheap guns, and noone can afford to pay for unionized American labourers to hand-fit and inspect parts anymore like they did in the 50s. the internet makes it possible for people to ##### and have their cries reach the ears of the entire world.
if you like the 870s, just buy whichever fits your fancy/budget. its a rock solid design, everything on them can easily be replaced/fixed/customized.

I agree 100% Had a Remington 870 for year and only had 1 Jam other then that flawless use every time. Best bet would be to handle all of em and see what feels/shoots best for you.

Alright I think I'll look into the wingmaster. Thanks for the very informative post.

I have a Benelli Nova. I added the 14oz. mercury recoil reducer and a Polychoke 2 with muzzle brake. Even with those, a 3 1/2" magnum turkey load sure wakes you up and at 30 yards the wad sticks into the tree over 1/2" with pellets.

I had some 3 1/2" magnum duck/goose loads and almost deafened my buddy when he got ahead of directly beside me during hunting. Shorter shells work well with no feed issues. It takes down very quick and easy to clean if it takes a dunking (been there, done that). My Dad has an 870 and it is harder to field strip but seems to work just as well. They will all go boom when the trigger is pulled. Best thing is finding the one that fits you best and you are comfortable handling. Benelli barrels are harder to find and seem to be more expensive than 870 or Mossberg.

Best advice my one buddy gave me is to get the best/highest quality gun you can to start with. For me the Benelli was it. If I had an extra $1K I would have gone Beretta. At almost 2x the cost of a 870 or Moss the Nova with a couple of upgrades was what I could do. I was not pleased with the factory chokes on mine, they wouldn't pattern worth a darn. Compare the same rounds through the Polychoke and it is like night and day on my Nova.

Hope that help a little.

Ok well with that advice about getting the highest quality shotgun you can get I think I'm going to start another thread asking about the best high quality semi auto shotgun. Feel free to post in that thread as well if you've gotten or shot any high quality shotguns. Or you can post here as I will still be checking this thread.
