I have a bolt for a Japaneese Arisaka Type 99 rifle. (Or I think it is anyways)

The bolt is bent down like a K98. It does not looked to be welded on at all. It functions perfectly in my Arisaka long rifle.

Was this ever standard issue, sniper? after market modification? I have no idea....

I believe the Japanese had offset scopes like the Americans and us Canadians on some of our Rosses. That would make the bent bolt unnecessary.

They did have offset scopes, but they had bent bolts as well. That said yours doesnt look quite right to me.

type 97 doesnt have a bent bolt, carbine , 99 ,38 dont either.

woild have to guess the work of bubba

not the first, and not the last that i have been wrong.

i'll amend that with a standard 99 and 38 were not built with a bent bolt. however with god knows how many series and variations they could have some , bah i'll come back when i've had more sleep.

No worries :) ; I shudder to think about the amount of milsurp knowledge that you've forgotten, but I've yet to learn!......:p

You have what appears to be a standard Type 38 rifle bolt which has been bent/gunsmithed by someone along the way. It is bent too steeply to be a sniper bolt. Look at the pictures posted of the Type 97 in this thread.

LOL. I own two arisaka's and it looks like someone did a decent job on bending that bolt, but, agreed, it looks far too steep to be a true sniper modification. Even so, unless your gunning for 100% collector value, there's nothing wrong with it if it functions. Remember, what good is a collector's gun if you can't use the thing? Save up, buy some rounds and let her sing. Or wail as is the case in some Arisaka's (Worn bores... *shudder*)

Drachenblut: last gun show i went to there was someone with a smoothbore arisaka and he wanted 250 for it with a stock that looked like it was attacked with asian beavers..... no innuendo intended

That might have been a training rifle, designed for use with blanks. Unfortunately a live round will also chamber with nasty results as the recievers were pot metal.

Talquin: Yeap. It's incredible what people want for these old Arisaka's... I'm lucky to own two, including one Cavalry Carbine and a Bayonet to match her. *Smiles* Now to site the thing in... come on Saturday!

I think it might be original. But my Japanese is a bit weak so I'm not sure.

[update: no this is not an arisaka, see following comments below...]

This is from a section of the book that I believe is on the type 99. There are three different models here with roman numerals I, II, and III to distinguish them, the most obvious differences are the types and postions of the metal fixtures in the buttstock. The type II in the middle has a bent bolt.

Lets see. Mauser rotary safety, Mauser tangent rear sight, Mauser bayonet lug, yep they are Mausers. Ctg is 7.9 Mauser also.
