Beretta 1301 shell choice

For plinking at the range I make slugs from challenger target loads. Found a small hole saw for tile that cuts the peddles out of a loaded shell but leave the shoulder acting almost like a roll crimp. I dump all the shot into my lead pot and cast them with a lee 1oz key drive slug. Stuff the slug back in where the shot was and get on with it. Low recoil, about 1100 fps and very consistent. It's a great winter project that is not hard at all. I have no leading after close to 750 this summer alone.

My coworker told me that he takes a target round and cuts the hull in the crush section all around so when you fire it the wad and entire top section with the shot acts like a slug and he claims they are deadly
I haven’t had the guts to try it just yet to see if it works

I have a bunch of already made 1 oz Lee key drive slugs that I bought of a caster
Might try your idea and just replace the shot with the slug and save the shot for reloading other shells

I've shot hundreds of Challenger low recoil, 1 oz slugs through my Beretta without issue. As matter of fact, it's what is available at my range off the shelf. I've never shot some through a chrony, but I would imagine that if they aren't 980 fps, they'd be very comparable?
Challenger low recoil slugs are more like 1200-1300 fps

Makes any round into a big game round, but the aiming ballistics are going to be unknowable at any distance. It's well worth knowing about but is usually considered a move of desperation and is obviously not going to be a shell you can run through an action like a regular shell, or even carry around with you for very long.

Cut shell, or red neck slug. It works in a pinch but it's not ideal, or something I would do often. But yes, it does work.
