Hey everyone. I`ve been in the market for a Tac shotgun just to throw some slugs and buckshot down range at my farm. Shoulders are getting older (LOL) Was looking at the M4 Benelli but read some reviews on the Beretta 1301 as a softer shooter. Anyone have one of these? And how well do they hold up? i`ve got older mint condition Beretta A303`s that shoot like a dream for hunting. Just wondering if the quality is still there in the newer Beretta.

the 1301 does shoot softer than a Benelli.
I would recommend the 1301 comp. You can get a 21" barrel one from IRUNGUNS. Has a choked barrel and 2 beads on a rail that line up quicker than ghost ring sights and are fairly accurate.

I've never shot a "Blink" Beretta, but I like the way the M4 recoils despite that it seems to kick a bit harder than other gas shotguns, that use a conventional piston-around-the-mag-tube-connected-to-action-bars type setup. The M4 seems to have less shimmy and vibration as it cycles.

Anyway, the 1301 seems to be a nice gun at a good price, I almost bought one, but the wonky bolt release concerned me, and I held off hoping Beretta would redesign it.

You won't find a faster shooter and it comes with shims and and cast offs to fit, mine comes up quick and ghost ring sights are level and centered perfect, nothing wrong with bolt release. Double taps are easy!

I have had one (the competition model) for a few weeks now and it eats everything I feed it so far. I would say it is soft shooting but I haven't fired a lot of semi shotties. I am very impressed with it overall. Fit and finish is excellent.

There's the potential issue of hitting the forward release and tying up the gun by dumping shells on the lifter.

You can get aftermarket release shouds that will prevent that, but this something Beretta should have fixed by now on an otherwise excellent platform.

I'll admit I don't have a ton of range time with it yet but I haven't seen this as an issue, if the bolt is back it just releases it. If the bolt is forward and you hit it at the right angle it release a round or rounds from the mag but why would you hit it while shooting unless your bolt was locked back? It actually makes it really easy to unload by holding the lifter up and hitting the release.

It might not be much of an issue if you're just shooting it recreationally at the range, but under stress, in the dark, etc might be a different story.

I believe some tactical instructors and police departments may have passed on it for that reason.

Well, I'll be using it in 3gun this year. I'll make sure to post after a few matches if it's an issue. I was doing some drills with it yesterday and I don't foresee any.

Taking another look at the 1301, although I'd be going with the Comp version.

I have three of them, and have shot the #### out of them. They shoot fast, they have reliably fed everything through them, and have had zero malfunctions.

I have thousands of rounds through them and have never "accidentally" hit the release.

Which version (s) do you have?

I believe unintentional shell dump is more likely to be an issue with the Comp model.

Hitting a button at the wrong time, or in the wrong place is a training issue - if you can keep your finger off the trigger, you should be able to keep it off the bolt release with the bolt forward. If nothing else, you could just run the bolt like an AK and not use the release for anything but administrative handling.

Here is the original thread all 193 pages and the two groups that made aftermarket release shrouds. there is also malfunction clearing drill discussed.
DOCGKR a shotgun recognized guy had them pulled from duty use, because of the problem.

The TAU adaptor looks simple and cost effective.

Thanks for the link, very good info. That SGA stock adapter looks very intriguing.

Thanks.

While it doesn't seem particularly likely to press that side of the lever accidently, derp happens.

I've seen even the best trained shooters screw up when they're not under life altering stress, like in the Benelli M4 review video that Jerry Miculek did last year where he forgets to disengage the safety.
