Depends. I've always found that 3" kick WAAAY too much out of my 14". 2 3/4 is still going plenty fast to do some damage.

I'd rather have a little less velocity and an accurate followup shot, than one big BOOM and 1/2 second longer to get the second one downrange.
 
For animal defense I go with 2 3/4" Brennekes too. At 25 yards or less my priorities are a hard cast slug with good penetration and 100% feed and extraction reliability in my shotgun.

In theory certainly yes, and in Alaska, one of the most popular 3 inch slugs for smoothbores are the Brenneke Black Magic 3 inch slugs. The cost here is in recoil, and these slugs cost you in 'punishing' recoil.

But if you have ever had the experience firing 2 3/4 'regular' RWS Brenneke Rotweill slugs, they have less recoil than even normal, Winchester Super-X foster, 2 3/4 inch slugs.

Plus they penetrate considerably deeper on game.
(compared to any foster slug)
This lessened recoil, is a nice extra factor, to get on target quicker, if you need rapid follow up shots.

That's alot of extra confidence in the devil's club thickets of the Wet Coast, far from home.

The regulaar foster type slog does not penetrate well on bear, and while fine on deer would be marginal on griz or even black bear.

The reduced caliber saboted type slugs fired at higher velocity will penetrate much better and kill better than a foster slug on heavier animals.

The regular 12 gauge slug is well suited for shooting to milk jugs and smallish deer. A 30-30 is a much better bear defense round however.

One small bit of advice, take or leave it.
Use one round of buckshot, and the heaviest you can get, for your first shot out of your smoothbore, in close bush.
The rest of the magazine capacity, follow up with only, the best slugs you can afford.

The thoery is, IF you are surprized at close range, by a bear/cougar whatever, if you are flustered, and foul your shot, perhaps one or two or three pellets will give you, a second or two, to recover and take better aim with slugs following in rapid succession.

Just a thoery.

Personally, I start off with bird shot (to blind) then use alternating slugs and buck shot. :p

But in all seriousness... if your shooting smooth bore Winchester Super-X box of 15 at canadian tire... seem to work really well I can hit an inch circle at 25 meters just about every time... in my rifled barrel I use Winchester Supreme 2-3/4 385grs

Or some buckshot...

Makes a lot sense. I think the prov fish & Wildlife officers use a similar concept.

Interesting you should say that. Although it may not apply, I can remember hiking in the Eastern Rockies, deep in the Kananaskis Country and finding, lone Remington factory, expended 3 inch buckshot empites. This was in high alpine meadow. Come to think of it, that one instance, was not the only empty shotgun shells we found. (parkland)

I went here today and bought some Brenneke slugs. 2 packs of 10. This place is a supplier for dealers. I asked if they had .45 hollow points and they brought me out some .45 DPX hollow points. Soon after someone else comes out and says that they will not sell me the hollow points unless I am a cop? So sick of this kind of treatment!!!!! I guess it's a trip to Epps again! Some people do buy hollow points to shoot bowling pins or just to try out at the range and I told him this. I really shouldn't have picked up the Brennekes, will never go there again. I am clean cut and don't think I look suspicious...really hate it when they make me feel like a criminal.
 
Nice to see the dealer only wholesaler is selling to non dealers... PS if you reload I had holopoints and have more on the way...

the remington 000 buck worked very well for me 3 years ago. They have
8 x .36 caliber balls and they group pretty tightly at 30-40 yards. I have shot several boxes into sand dune backdrops and they are impressive for cheap buckshot. I payed about $4 for 5. I usually load the first 2 rounds with the buckshot, then a slug to "round it out". IMHO the buckshot is a little more forgiving with something that is meant more to be pointed and shot, than aimed and shot.

FWIW, I've been told by a retailer that, during inspections, the CFO gives them grief about having hollowpoint handgun ammunition in stock and apparently has also sought assurances that said retailer would voluntarily restrict sales to government. I learned this during a interrogation/lecture from said retailer on how HP handgun ammunition - in his opinion - has no legitimate use and "why would you want it?" (An interesting business model, this type of "customer service", but I won't be back, Walter.)

As far as this alleged action by the CFO, I don't want to believe that this is true, but believe it I do.
 
cbabes from my price list there isnt much differenece between what I pay for them and what you did... sometimes I wonder if the dealer list is what the dealer should be selling them for not what the dealer should be paying...

Legitimate use for holopoints... how about its much safer shooting holopoints at just about everything...steal gongs they explode... less chance of them being deflected off the berms at the ranges or ricocheting off a rock. They are all around safer to use over FMJ...
Haha last time I checked the hague... said's its illegal to shoot people with holopoints... at least thats for soldiers. I guess criminals are different. Or what about the time like in california when those three guys took on the bank with auto AK's and body armor... the police had to go to the local gunshop and restock there weapons...

I would love to be standing behind the counter when that happens up here... oh you need some ammo... sorry we dont sell anything for law enforcement use... maybe try bass pro... hahah
