best 17hmr rifle

hey, whats a good rifle in 17hmr that people are really pleased with. no need for open sight since i will be mounting a scope. Also not looking to break the bank, so i'm thinking around the 600 dollar mark. Any feedback would be appreciated.
 
following. I had a savage, and it was a laser beam, but the savage mags are really terrible and I landed up selling it because of the mag issues.
 
I have used a Marlin xt17 in the past and it was a great little rifle. Very accurate, no issues at all. Wish I hadn't sold it.
 
One of the CZ .17HMR or the T1X Tikka. That being Said I have had 2 savage .17 hmrs in the past as well and bot of those were very accurate as well. Probably which ever fits you best. All 3 of theose options have chassis, stock and lots of aftermarket parts to make it your own .
 
I have 2 CZ 455's, a Canadian and an American. Both trouble free, no open sights, and wickedly accurate.

I seen reviews about the mag on the tikka being a bit cheap. I own a tikka in 308. And the mag feels cheap but zero issues. So.hard to decide.
 
I'd second the suggestion of a CZ 455. You can find them rather easy in Canada, in a variety of finishes from beach wood, to the Lux models with checkered walnut. Plus CZ makes great rifle sights. If you can find a set (Or better yet when ITAR changes get them from the states) you can switch out the barrels in them and interchange between 17hmr, 22lr, and 22 magnum.
 
I've been looking for the cz combo (2 barrels). Havent had any luck. Cz website says they were discontinued. But if I can find one anywhere, I would love to buy one.

Ya they don't exist in Canada anymore from what I can tell, but I'm finding Cz 457's for like $650 in 17hmr. Which is just the latest offering from CZ. They sell the barrels in what they call minisets. Once the rules change in the states we may be able to bring them in without as much hassle. Not sure if the 457 does the barrel swapping though.
 
I have a savage, well two in 17hmr. Bolt and A17. Great guns. Especially for the price. I would like to have a t bolt... alot. I don't think there are bad 17's . All seem to be impressive

If you can’t find the barrel sets just buy a couple rifles and sell the parts you don’t need. I wanted a fluted factory barrel but they don’t make them so I bought a grey thumbhole heavy barrel and sold the action and stock to help pay for it. I have a bunch of barrels/stocks/parts kicking around for them from doing this.
 
i had an older 93r17 (2005'ish) that I sold last year bought another one after looking at all the current offerings. My bolt was abit rough but after 4-5 hundred rounds it's notably better a shot of lube on the bolt and your into Tikka territory with bolt smoothness. They do not cost as much as the others but you can put the extra $$ towards some glass and ammo.

Yep, the 457 uses the same barrels and swaps just like the 455, they are directly interchangeable. Lilja barrels, for example, now marks them as 455/457. I have a 455 full stock, with both .17HMR and .22LR barrels. I bought the extra barrel from Wolverine with the rifle. Wolverine should be able to bring in any barrel you want for it. For a hunting rifle, I'd say the CZ is your best quality for price within your budget. Savage's are accurate, but nowhere near as well built as CZ's.

That's good to know. I've got a 455 lux II in 22lr, and It's an amazing rifle for the price, far superior quality to my other 22lr's. I'm liking it so much I'm tempted to buy a 550 or 557 carbine, as the quality on these is almost on par with my more expensive Winchester m70. I'd love to get one of the swappable barrels in 17hmr for the 455 as well, would be nice to not have to take up so much room in the safe for the rimfires.
 
Hey s.martin~the smallest group I ever shot with a factory gun and factory ammo was a CZ 452 Varmint in 17HMR shooting Hornady 20gr. HPs. It's the only gun I can say I genuinely wish I hadn't sold. I've had at least 2 Savage heavy barrel HMRs, and 1 Marlin 917. (actually, 3 Marlin 917s if you could the 2 I had in 17M2). Unlike 22RLR where if you spend enough $ on ammo you can up the odds of getting great accuracy...it's more of a "roll of the dice" with 17HMR ammo. Yes, you'll find one it loves..or at least, really likes. :)

@ 100 yards (the distance I load test) it doesn't take a whole lot of wind to blow light bullets off course so to be honest. So, for that reason...I don't really "chase" 17 HMR accuracy like I do pretty much every other caliber. Naturally, a good gun with a good trigger will always outshoot lesser guns. If I had $600 I wanted to put towards a 17HMR~no question, I'd be tracking down a CZ 452 Varmint. Period.

My western gopher-shooter is a Marlin 917 heavy barrel with an aftermarket Rifle Basix trigger installed. It would be impossible to gauge how many gophers my nephew has sent to the great beyond with that gun...but suffice to say, hit ratio is very high. @ 100 yards (when load testing) in calm conditions...dime-sized groups are possible with it shooting 17gr Hornday ammo. Definitely gopher-accurate, and the trigger is superb.

Here is a blurry action shot of this rifle serving that purpose. The audible "pop" of gopher hits at over 150 yards in this spot...I'll probably never forget. lol

I think your best "bang for your buck" .17 hmr on the market currently is the CZ. Quality wise I'd put it far ahead of any of the Savages I've owned. Accuracy wise? I believe you could have any of them shoot about the same (minute-of-gopher @100 yards), but currently, the only .17 hmr I've kept is my 452 American, biggest down side to the Savages is the mag. That being said, I haven't tried the new Savage "B" series.
