Best .223 Ammo For Coyotes

OK, I now have my H&R .223 Rem SB2 Ultra Hunter, with 22" barrel, in hand. The serial number says it's a 2005 manufacture, and the barrel is serial number matched to the frame. I want to be 100% sure of the rate of twist, before buying any ammo. I think it's 1 in 12, which "calls for" 55 gr max. If it's 1 in 9, it would "want" 55 gr as a minimum. I have done a lot of looking online, and it looks like Marlin started making the barrels for these in 2007, and switched to 1 in 9. Like I said, I want to be sure, so does anyone know how to confirm. The H&R website refers to the Graybeard forums, but I still can't confirm there.

I found a thread on thehighroad.org, that says 2006 was the switch to 1 in 9, so mine's a 1 in 12, and I should use 55 gr max, so it looks like to the WWB 45s are good to go:)

Update, I have 200 rounds of UMC 55 gr MC (FMJ) on the way, for target practice, and just picked up 40 rounds of Remington 55 gr PSP, at a great price, for hunting. I'll try those for now, and when CDN Tire gets the WWB 45 gr ammo in, I'll try that as well. If anyone else wants to share their experience, with a 1 in 12 twist, and factory ammo for coyotes, I'd like to hear from you:)

do not even attempt to stick these through a remington 700.you wont hit nothing from my
prior experiences

That's pretty broad statement. Different Remington 700 models have different twist rate and will perform differently. For example, the SPS has 1 in 12." My XCR has 1 in 9."

My brother buys 45 gr (I think-could be 40 gr) Winchester whitebox ammo at Walmart. They are unbelievably accurate out of his Savage - to the point where he won't bother reloading. Price is about $28 for 40 rounds I think. It defies logic actually, the bullets have a folded copper tip which would reduce BC, but they hit whatever he aims at out to 400 yds.

I have the same logic defying problem. My Savage/Stevens 200 loves those damned white boxes! I've made several attempts to feed it more respectable ammunition but it keeps going for the junk food. The hollow points schwack coyotes well enough I guess. My only complaint is the sharp edge of the crimped tip seems to catch in the action every so often. (Not an issue for the H&R) I've finally got my hands on a few pounds of Varget and a batch of Noslers in 55 gr, hopefully it remedies things.

Keep us posted on here, kennymo, if you don't mind:)

My m700 .223 likes Remington Core-Lokt 55g PSP. Coyotes not so much, Although I did get the odd 3" exit hole from less than 100 yard. Other times NO exit, All depends where i hit I guess.

I've been shooting Winchester varmint-x rounds. They 55gr with a polymer tip and my howa loves them, been printing 1/2" groups at 100yds. Not bad for 16.99/box IMO

It pays to try different ammo. My Stevens 200 seems to shoot what ever I feed well enough. I did find it loves federal fusion 62 grain, but this summer I stumbled across some MFS (the steel cased cheap ammo) by some strange twist of fate the MFS 62 grain shoots to the same point of impact and groups around .8 of an inch at 100 yards and stays minute of sporting clay out to 200 yards (I haven't tried them farther). I look forward to trying them on a coyote this year. I can barely reload anything comparable for the price.

My 700 ADL .223 has the 1 in 9" twist and it loves the cheap Win White Box 45gr HP's. I've nailed coyotes to over 300 yards with no problems. Although I have dies and components I still use the Winchester loads as my go to ammo.

Maybe I'll need to try some of that MFS. I tried Federal American Eagle in 62gr FMJ and couldn't get real tight groups in my Stevens. Maybe 1.5" at 100 at best. That damn white box Winchester keeps shooting right around .75", just that occasional feeding hiccup with it that makes me not want to use it where I need a reliable follow up. Might have to grab some Fusion for the weekend to give it a try too.

I should have added that its the MFS 62 grain soft point, the 62 grain FMJ I haven't played with and wouldn't shoot at an animal.

Ive tried white box 45 grain out of my sa58 and it did not group at all. Maybe 12-16 inches at 100 meters. Ive used americian eagle black box and it seems to shoot well but I wouldent with it. Ive tried umc 55 grain ammo and it had failures to extract. Ive also tried mfs and it was junk. The only ammo i hunt with is some soft point 55 gain winchester that I get a Ct.

If you were getting 12-16"... Something else was going on, probably loose scope mounts or a bad scope... I have seen white box loads shot from many rifles and it has performed pretty well in all of them.
