Trabant

Just put some money down on a Pardini SP NEW today.
My IZH now becomes backup, and my High Standard Supermatic will now be looking for a new home.

Next step will be a Pardini .32 HP from the same person.
Will keep the M52 but some other centerfires will have to go.

Many pistols are capable of fine groups, locked up in a rest.
The classsy ones are those that will do it consistantly from one hand, unsupported.
That's what separates the "Mercedes" from the 'Trabant"
Are you kidding? Mentioning a Trabant and a Mercedes in the same sentence is like putting a Norinco in the same class as a Les Baer. Totally different animals,eh?

:) Effective analogy, eh?

It is amazing how phrases give more meaning than the individual words themselves. No computer can handle the concepts in translating phrase like:
" My dog is on his last legs"
"It's curtains for him, I'm afraid"

I have been playing with a Ruger Mk II and it is probably as good as any .22 target pistol that I own. I also have a S W 422 and a Challenger III. I would say the Challenger III is probably the most accurate for me. Remember, one hand... not in a rest. Have a Beretta NEOS. Also pretty good. But these are all relatively inexpensive 'plinker' target pistols as good as they might be.

I am thinking I am going to move up a notch and participate in the local pistol league. I need centre fire and rimfire.

For centre fire I have purchased an almost new Smith & Wesson 52-2, which I am told is the latest version of the 52 (I haven't checked yet). It shoots ONLY 38 HBWC. Which are the most unusual rounds I have ever seen for centre fire. They are HOLLOW BASE WAD CUTTERS. Flush to the brass. No nose at all. What's a fair price to pay for one in minty condition?

For rim fire, I am going to try the Smith and Wesson 41 with some target loads. The one I have decided to purchase has extended target sites on it as well. Interesting gun. I see them advertised from $800 up to $2000. What's a fair price to pay for one with the extended sites on it?

I am also going to try out a Kimber .22 conversion on my Kimber Target II Stainless Steel pistol. The Target II is quite accurate - am hoping that the S&W 52-2 will be as good or better. I have even thought about going to the Kimber Target II in .45 (instead of 9mm) as the league scores such that if your bullet hole TOUCHES the next ring in, you get the higher score and as we all know, .45's make a bigger hole. I am hoping the Kimber .22 conversion kit mounted on my Target II will give me some serious accuracy as Kimber claims. We shall see. We shall see.

I also see a FAS target pistol for sale and am thinking of trying it out. Understand they are quite good. What the heck. I can always sell what I don't do well with. And that's probably most of them because they are all better guns that I am at shooting.

I am going to be putting the Smith and Wesson 422, the NEOS and the Challenger III up for sale to pay for the 41, 52-2 and Kimber .22 conversion kit (and maybe that FAS). So anyone wanting to try out the aforementioned keep an eye open on the EE.

Hope I am not making a mistake with these.... time will tell. One thing; I am hanging on to the Ruger Mk II for a while yet. I love it. In fact, I think I am going to look for another one with a Bull barrel on it so that my son and I can shoot at the same time.

The S&W52 is a Great gun. It really teaches you to get the basics right. Not forgiving at all. Love mine.

As for 22s, spend a few hundred more and get a used Walther GSP or Pardini.
Parts are available and much better ergonomics than the S&W41.

One of my friends is a HUGE S&W collector. Name it, he has it.
He bought a used GSP last year to replace the three S&W41s he was using for Bullseye. He thinking about a .32 GSP now to replace his S&W52s.

I'll be looking for a .32 Pardini to go with my .22 Pardini.

Torontogunguy,

Nice used S&W M52 go for about $800, like new for a little over $1000... and the only new one I've seen for sale in the last 5 years was pretty close to $2000.

The .45 makes bigger hole logic is good if you want to justify buying a .45... But for target work, a .32 or .38SPL are musch easier to handle in the time/rapid fire relays!

If you want to get bulleye accuracy on a 1911 frame, try the Marvel Conversion unit #1. It's the most common conversion at Camp Perry.

It's already been stated here,

there are definately different classes of target pistols.
Much like any other firearm.

The Ruger, etc are at the lower tier of the target class. The Walther etc are at the top.

Someone mentioned the Ruger Hunter MKIII. I happen to have this pistol myself. It's a great beginner pistol (which is what I am). I had the V-notch sites changed on mine to the Target sights. It made a huge difference. With match ammo the pistol was shooting very well. Definately not in the same league as the upper tier. But still fun.
