Best 7MM cartridge

7x57mm in a classic Mauser
7x64 in a modern Blaser R8
.280 Remington in a Model 700 Mountain Rifle

Those are my choices as far as classiest "packages"/most representative 7mm cartridges even though I'd still probably just grab a stainless 7mm Rem Mag or .280 AI.

To define "best," you would need to specify some criteria... Historically best? Best in the West? Best in the East? Most prolific in Africa? Most popular in NA, or in Europe? Flattest shooting? Easiest to source components?

Lots of good answers, particularly when it come to a popular caliber like 7mm, .284... if you framed it something like;

"If you could only choose ONE 7mm cartridge to shoot in all circumstances for the rest of your life, what would you choose?"

That would sharpen the focus considerably. If forced to choose, I would have to say, under duress, .280 Ackley.

Assuming the engineers are 100% correct, the 7mm socialmediacountry is the "best" providing they
-have ammo stock in local retailers
-can reload in a equivalent manner to brass

Cartridges haven't really gone anywhere in over 100 years other than volume, shoulder angle, belt no belt. This is an advancement, personally the PRS shooters would benefit the most assuming it works as stated, running higher pressures can mean less powder, shorter barrel and less recoil for similar performance in whatever new shorty 6mm they go with.

OR, it could be a colossal failure and nothing but a headache and a useless barrel.

For my style of hunting, anything around the mid cased size of powder capacity like the 708 or 7x57 is just fine although these days my 7mm is a 280 Rem in either a falling block or a sporterized 1917 Enfield. Both are great for what they were built for as far as hunting and steel matches go.
IF I was going to shoot F/O ( which i have no plans to), I would likely just go for a rifle 284 Win.

I have 1 7BR, 1 7/08 1 7 Rem, 1 28 Nosler, 1 7-300 Win and 4 STWs. I guess from that it would seem the STW is my favorite though oddly I’ll likely never build another one. I can’t noticing that the 7-300 Win shoots exactly the same velocity with 180 Bergers as one of my STWs that I also use that bullet in, and does it with 10 grains less of the same powder, and 2 inches less barrel. It’s also more magazine friendly with the long high BC bullets, and the world is never going to run out of 300 Win brass. If practicality trumps sentiment its got to be my favorite. Over 1500 rounds through the Hart barrel now, much of those under circumstances that any sane person would call abuse and the lands have stubbornly refused to budge. I have a spare for it, when that day comes😄

This thread went from "best" to what "I have".

I would agree with Hoyt, context matters. I know what is in the basement, doesn't make it best.

That said, I really like 7-30 Waters for deer, and .280AI, and 7mmRM for deer at longer ranges and bigger critters. I could easily rid of the RM, and just stay with the Waters and AI.

Depends how far you want to shoot I guess. The 7mm-08/7x57 are great ballistic twins, 280/7x64 are probably the best all around cartridges to my mind, the 7mm Rem/Wby Mags give you a little more distance to work with, and aren't tough to take in terms of recoil. The 7mm STW/Dakota/28 Nosler push that a little further. The 7 RUM is the point of diminishing returns, and the 7mm-378 Wby was just too much of a good thing. Pick your use, I guess. - dan

The best 7mm is subjective to the end purpose...best for what? Efficiency? Accuracy? On-game performance? Smaller big game, or larger big game? All around performance or specialized performance?

Most will answer as to their "favourite" 7mm cartridge. This will be based on their individual experience with the various 7mm cartridges...and how many have used them all extensively enough to be able to give an educated answer.
(I have experience with and own rifles in the 7mm-08, 280 Rem, 7mm Rem Mag, and 7MM STW, shooting, handloading and hunting. I have shot the 7 Wby and RUM, but haven't handloaded or hunted with either. I now own a 7mm PRC but haven't made it to the range to sight it in yet. I also have not had the chance to shoot a 7x57 or 7x64 yet, or 275H&H. Although these are ballistic twins to the 7mm-08 and 280 Rem. My favourite is the 280 Rem, although I have shot more game with the 7MM STW, which I really like.)

Some have answered as to which chambering they have used the most...and in the end was that because of the chambering, or the rifle itself?
In either case, it is the "best", or favourite for them.
