Best 9mm Ammo for Self defence?

Flying ashtrays ( Hollow Points ) .
Iv'e hand loaded different types of hollow points & find speers work the best in my testings. Remember shot placements should be # 1 , then the ammo your using. If your a skilled shooter i'd aim for head shots first, then the neck shots second, groin shots third, body mass shots forth.

Mozambique, sir.

If you aren't ready for a knife attack - anything inside of 21 feet and you're pretty much f**ked. Even if you are ready, and it's outside of 21 feet it's a toss up.

I beg to differ...if someone were to charge at you with a knife from 21 feet...ONE single Hydra-Shock in the f*cking head would stop you dead in your trackes. Even a 10-shot mag rapid fire at center mass would seriously put a monkey wrench in your program.

OUCH!

Let me say first of all... that looks absolutely vicious. Ouch indeed. If you could get this expansion without the jacket separating from core, a single hit to any part of the body (except maybe the limbs) is going to cause catastrophic injury.

I did a thread about 9mm ammo awhile back. I absolutely love 9mm and I try and "collect" a sample of as many kinds as I can find. For self defence, have a look at these (some people have mentioned them already):

Remington Golden Sabre 147gr. This is Remington's top of the line bullet. It is a brass (rather than copper, for you newbies) jacketed hollow point.

And have a look at the price. Yaowzah! I just bought one box (on sale for $26) to check it out:

This is the Golden Sabre compared to two other Remington 9mm. The 115gr. +P bonded jacketed HP is another really smoking round. When you fire that stuff you think, "Yah, this would work". It has some omph to it, to say the least.

From this angle you can see that the Golden Sabre and the +P bonded jacketed hollow point have a longer overall length than the others. The regular UMC stuff seems to be seated lower in the case than many brands though (although I also find it to be by far the best "pratice ammo" on the market - for the price). Left to right these are:
Golden Sabre 147gr.
+P bonded jacketed 115gr.
UMC 115gr, HP
UMC 147gr. flat nose MC
UMC 115gr. round nose MC

From this view you can see that the "cavity" on the Golden Sabres is huge. It also has that look to it that makes you think (or hope) that it will expand back in individual strips, like in Ronin's photo. This is where bonding to the core becomes important. All bullets flatten out and expand if they hit something hard enough. What you want is maximum expansion without having the jacket ripped off of the core.

Here are some more garden variety 9mm:

The chances are high, but I wouldn't bank my life on one round. An incident some years back in NY involved a guy who took 12ga slug right to the heart and continued to run from police for several blocks before dropping dead.

Sure.Is that being ready for the attack or being caught off guard?

During the force on force training I did, most in the class could draw and engage the assailant before being "slashed". We did have some warning as we knew that someone was going to attack. Everyone was distracted by other students prior to the "attack". Its nice to know that it is possible but again, I wouldn't bank my life on it. Some days you're alert and very aware. Other days, you're out to lunch.

Here is an interesting read:

since they discuss effectiveness in different guns, some ammo may exhibid FTF or FTE in a particular gun but others.

Nothing new here. Hence why reliability is the single most important factor when selecting a firearm. Effectiveness of any cartridge is projected under ideal laboratory conditions. It is impossible to take into account the mental, physical, and chemical(drugs) status of everyone when etermining what is or is not effective.

Nervous system, Respiratory system, or critical blood loss(bleeding out) are the only three ways to shut the body down. Place your shots..

There is no wonder bullet available. The best thing is shot placement with good ammo.

The human body is an amazing thing and often times won't "shut down" immediately (short of the brain stem being severed). There are cases of people fighting for around a minute with a completely destroyed heart. I know of a deputy sheriff stateside who shot an assailant in the head, and had three rounds bounce off the crown of the guys skull. He readjusted and put one through his eye which ended that problem, but he was stunned that the rounds skidded along the crown of this guys head.

Bottom line is shot placement with good reliable ammo, that's all you can do.

whats the best shop in the GVA that stocks hp ammo? most likely guessing reliable?

It comes and goes. Reliable is the place to start. I've bought the 115gr. +P JBHP from there, and the regular 115gr. HP, and I've seen the Golden Sabre stuff there before.

Hunter's in Surrey is where I bought the Golden Sabre's from. Try there.

Lever Arms - generally not much selection for ammo (if you ask me). I've bought Fiocchi HP's there before.

Try Italian if you don't mind being ignored and having to stand around until someone helps you. Can't say as I've seen much exotic pistol ammo there, but give it a try. As I'm sure you can tell, I am not a fan of this shop and generally avoid it completely.

You just have to keep checking around. Eventually you'll find some different stuff.

Bonded bullets have their jackets and the lead core "bonded" or melted together to prevent the jacket and the core from separating. Standard HP is simply a copper/brass jacket that has been formed around a lead core. The goal is to keep your projectile together so as to achieve maximum penetration.
