I'm looking for the best all around gun for bush/camp protection. I don't hunt but I spend a lot of time in bear and cougar country and I have a young family. It should be reasonably packable and able to work in all weather conditions.

I have been considering a 12G pump with an 18" barrel or a large caliber lever action (Marlin Guide etc.). I don't want a scope.

Any advice would be welcome,

Thanks

It's a bush gun so keep it simple and rugged, my suggestion would be a lever action 30-30... no scope. Your in the bush so distance is a main a factor (75 to 150 mr at the most) and a 150 or 170 gr bullet is perfect. This is what I use in northern Ontario for the past 20 + years.

I'm torn between 3 of my firearms for that purpose.

Dominion Arms 12.5" pump shotgun. - most versatile firearm in the world.

M44 Mosin Nagant - hits like a freight train plus bayonet.

SVT-40. - hits like a freight train as well but rapid fire and quick reloads.

Well, for shotguns I've recently been falling in love with the Winchester model 12. Unfortunately they haven't been in mass production for quite a while, and are getting slightly rare. I just love takedown guns.

As for rifles, have you considered a Browning BLR Takedown? It uses a magazine, which increases the number of calibers you can use versus a tube magazine.

Mossberg 464 30-30 - short length, lots of stopping power for cougars, bears etc.

Hatsan Marinegaurd 12g pump - All weather resistant nickel finish, short 20" barrel, load it with slugs or buckshot and look out!

Mossberg 590 A1 with extended mag tube on an 18.5 inch or 20 inch barrel or a ruger m77 hawkeye in 375 ruger are my choices for a bush gun that involves travel in grizz country. Have had some runs ins with grizz's before and a 3+1 shotgun did not seem at all up to the job when a bear pushing over 8 feet when standing was being uphappy. The 375 is quick pointing and irons are good and allows for more distant target engagement over a shotgun

My choice, and by no means is it definitive, is a 12ga pump gun. mix the load slugs and 00 buck I put a 00 first that way if it's a cat he gets it if it's a PO'd bear he gets hurt then the slug comes right after.

There is no such beast.
But, it might be debated to death here and around the campfire till the end of time.
But , for me there will always be a Center fire .243 or larger and a Shot Gun 20 or 12 gauge in my locker/safe.
Tight Groups,
Rob

I am looking at the Marlin 336 Y 30-30. 16" barrel short LOP, nice and quick handling and only 460.00 My only fault with it is the finish looks like they used flat black BBQ paint.

PO has right idea. Pump shotgun with short but legal barrel and IMHO lesser gauge like 20ga or max 16ga for faster shot recovery, loaded with slugs or better jet full caliber round balls for better accuracy and better penetration. Firearm? nothing is better IMO than older "slam fire" Ithaca mod 37.
