Best all around hunting caliber

Best calibre? Kinda like asking what's the best car I guess.

IMO the "best" is the one you're most comfortable shooting and can place on target the most consistently. It depends on where you're hunting as well
If I could only have one hunting rifle if probably go with a .308. Very diverse loads available, and found everywhere. Big enough to drop whatever you want, and small enough not to completely destroy the smaller stuff. This year I'm doing all my hunting with grandpas old '94 30/30 and and .44 ranch hand with a full stock. It's the year of the open sight lever for me lol.

I'd say don't worry so much about it and get out there and shoot some different loads/calibers/platforms and see what you shoot best. And have fun!

Well, if you're not after the big bears, just ungulates, then a .308 loaded with Barnes TTSX ammo will easily take anything with antlers,
and have a bit less recoil snap than a 30.06. Short action as well, for a stiffer receiver and a shorter bolt throw. Ammo is
easy to find as well, and it doesn't carry a higher price like the magnum cartridges do.

I think this is the best gun for hunting zombie leprechauns. It would also be an excellent choice for Burrowing Owls.

I have a 30.06 but I been looking at 7mm RMag. Research tells me a 175gr 7mm out of a RMag has more punch and reach than a 180gr 30.06. - also less subject to wind.

Can anyone tell me how much recoil is felt from a 7mm RMag vs 30.06?

Depends on the weight and fit of the rifle.
Generally I found the 30.06 to be nicer to shoot then the 7mm.

Both rifles where identical Savage 111's.

I'd go with the 30.06 but would be perfectly happy with a .308 for my hunting needs.
