Best ammo for personal protection

Guess again...your average tweaker or meth-head variant might not, but thre are those that do. If I were ever going to knock off a robbery, esp. someone's house that I knew had firearms and that was the purpose of my 'visit', I sure as hell would wear a vest. To think/assume that someone would not be wearing one is just foolish...

There are exceptions to everything. And I'm not judging anyone that wants to have personal defense ammo in their firearms. But I'm just saying most burglars are not wearing a bullet proof vest. On the other hand, if your house is being targeted because you have firearms, they may wear one. But chances are they're going to scope your house out and wait till no one is home anyways. They don't want to get shot anymore then you do.

plenty of B&E suspects have been arrested wearing body armor, it's far more common than you'd think.

That was my point Rob, seems even B&E'ers think outside the box now and then. Some folks don't seem to realize that....

I think that the handloaded ammo issue is a bit of an urban legend which came out of the USA. Has anybody ever heard of a case where handloaded ammunition was the deciding factor in the decision for a guilty verdict against a person acting in self defense in a case in Canada? If you take unmodified factory bullets and reload them within the specifications in a reloading manual you haven't done anything that factory ammo doesn't duplicate or even exceed.

If you have to shoot someone, you WILL be charged.

A jury will hear all the points and the fewer things the Crown can say AGAINST you the better. Court cases can be as much about emotions and preceptions as about facts, especially when there is doubt about some "facts".

It may not be a deciding factor but using "SPECIAL SUPER HANDLOADED KILLING EXPLODING HOLLOWPOINTS" paints you a different colour than if you use the same ammo that the "good guys" use.

Remember that self defense is about doing only what is necessary to "STOP THE THREAT"

not always you won't, and yes we have precedent for that in Canada.

I would have thought that my statement:

pretty much says that you are in court.

and yes we have precedent for that in Canada.
Can you tell me when and where just for interest's sake?

there have been two in recent memory, but I can't for the life of me remember where.

My friend in Dallas told me about the time when him and some other of his father's employees had to shoot two burglers in their Liquor shop. One was killed but the other one survived, and sued. And won punitive damage award, whatever that is. After that trial, some police officers came to talk to them, and told me friend to shoot to kill next time, just to rid of headaches of aftermath fiasco like the one they experienced. Quite a Law enforcement they got down there, I thought.
BTW, my friend used USP with 9mm, he told me. I wonder what difference it would've made if he used some other calibre...

+1 on the Urban legend about using reloads for SD...

how would they even know if it's factory or reloads if I use 'factory' components?

Guys who claim using reloaded or handloaded ammo run a risk in court read to many gun rags and to much Ayoob. A good shoot is a good shoot. Period. Done jury time and had a Judge define self defense explain the "castle principle" to us and what constitutes self defense. At no time did the type of ammo ever arise in the conduct of the trial OR as part of the Judge's comments.

One of the best self defense rounds is a 200 LSWC in .45acp which just happens to be my IDPA round.:D

Take Care
