You're a wild and wooly one, ain't ya'... maybe when I grow up, I will as tough and accomplished as you... you don't need that Pixie Dust 6.5... your pocket knife should be good enough for grizzlies...

I'm fond of the 6.5's as far as efficiency goes, .260 Remington, 6.5x55 Swede, 6.5 Creedmore all turn my crank. So does pretty much anything on the .308 case.

Some can say that " my .243 will do this "... or.. " my .500 super duper wiz bang tank smasher can do that ",...but it all boils down to one cartridge and every single one of us, deep down inside knows, that the most versatile, useful, well rounded cartridge is the grand old 30.06 Springfield,...we all know it, but lots will not admit it. From 110gr to 220gr bullets, varmits to moose, it's a real killer, just as accurate as any other hunting round, cheap ammo found anywhere, manufactured in all rifle platforms, by all manufactures, reloading components are cheap and readily available, recoil is no more noticeable than the rest of the standard calibers,..so whats not to like,....30.06 is the answer.

I have a 30-06 and I like it a lot, its extremely versatile..... However I must disagree. The most versatile is clearly the 7mm REM MAG. 30-06 goes from 110-220, the 7mm goes from 110-175. 45grain difference might seem like a lot, but here is where the 7mm starts to shine. The 175 out of the 7mm will have more velocity and energy then any 30-06 round including the 220 grain. The 175 grain has 1ft/lb more recoil then the 180 out of the 30-06 and less recoil then the 220grain out of the 30-06. Its light recoil, high energy and best of all long distance is far superior to the 30-06. It will allow you to hunt varmints far away, sheep far away, but also big animals such as Moose and Elk at close or long range.

I have shot a wide range of 140 grain hunting rounds out of my Sako in 6.55,
how do hoter hand loads impact recoil? Does the extra powder make much of a difference with the same basic projectile?

Not legal of course and highly unethical, but A TACK DRIVING 204 RUGER shooting a 40 gr bullet to the brain pan of any species short of african animals would be my choice of Lethality vs recoil... FS

I have seen the .204 used on deer, 1 a 70 yard shot just below the ear. You could barrely find the entrance, the exit was the size of a base ball and all the blood vessels were gone.
Ethics is a different story

I run a 308 tikka and like it. 7-08 is intriguing as well. Hand loading provides a lot of versatility which will allow you to shoot something a little bit bigger then you are comfortable with. To do it over again I would probably go for the 300wm or even the 338wm and download to my comfort level/game conditions. That's my apples to grapefruit comparison.
