Best Bedside Defense Shotgun

Wow, I had no idea Innisfil was getting this bad.
I keep a 4' long 1" aluminum rod behind the door in my bedroom. It is awesome for lining up scopes and would be my go to in the event that there was an unwanted person in my house. I feel comfortable that I could defend myself and my family with nothing more than just that. I don't own anything worth taking someone's life for and I have great insurance.
The thought of people owning firearms for self defense doesn't scare me. The perception (real or not) that this is a requirement of daily life does. How the world continues to change is a vastly scary notion.

I'm always amazed when I go on American gun forums and see folks that seem to have crates worth of small arms for home defence, yet the spend almost nothing on other security measures.
There's no excuse for that as it stands at least 40 years into the time since gangs, junkies and thrill killers became a common threat.
At the very least you want someone breaking in to be have to be noisy and obvious about it!

One interesting tradeoff is barrel length. Handiness versus hearing damage and flash. Hearing damage is better than death, but flashbanging oneself stupid isn't great either. More than 18" would be awkward, but 8.5" might not be much handier than 12".
Indeed. To OP; all the legal and ballistic talk aside: anything that goes boom, when the trigger is pulled. Bad guys don't care if your using a benelli, remington, or a Tobin. Be familiar and proficient with its operation, be comfortable firing it, but most importantly, have a well thought out plan and be prepared to use it, failing the layers of previous safe guards you have in place. These should be redundant and layered, lethal force MUST be the last option (sometimes the last option is the best option). That being said, YOU are RESPONSIBLE, and ANSWERABLE, For the consequences after the hammer drops, you can't undo fired rounds. If you are unsure, hesitant, don't understand progression or mentally and/or morally indecisive. I HIGHLY recommend simply calling the cops for help and direction. There is significant more thought and consideration to put into a question such as this, than simply hardware.

Meh. So so. But its really a proximity gun at that size. Not exactly the setup for precision, but thats expected. For me, its just the fun setup to shoot at old furniture at the cabin before I throw it in the fire

Man that's way too short and tight fitting for me. I can't get comfortable shouldering anything under 30".
Anything under just makes me feel like I'm trying on a jacket that's simply too small. Constricted, binded up, boxed in.
I'm not even that big either at just over 6ft and under 200lbs.

The crazy thing is that with star shuriken being prohibited weapons there is no defense if you are caught in possession of them and 5 years in prison.
That's more time than most criminals receive for having illegal handguns which are 1000x more effective than shuriken.
Our laws make no sense when it comes to self defense.

We can't worry about that when considering how to protect our homes and families. What we need to worry about is whether or not we're adequately prepared for a real world assault from a home invasion. That is as much a matter of mindset as it is a matter of weapons. Criminals who break into your home when they know you are at home are the most dangerous, because they have a reasonable expectation of being confronted, yet despite that, they are confident that they will profit from the adventure and escape without injury. Considering that mindset, its reasonable to assume they are prepared to use weapons and violence to accomplish their goals. They are unlikely to be driven off by a force of character alone, thus a physical confrontation must be considered. A defensive weapon which allows us to strike a decisive blow from a distance is desirable. There are few tools at our disposal that allow us to strike a blow from a distance, but there is one that can not only can strike a blow from a distance, but also strikes a blow out of proportion to our physical prowess. That tool is a firearm. Regardless of the firearm chosen, its desirable that shooting resolves the situation with the least number of rounds fired. Its not a question of whats best for killing a violent protagonist, the question is whats best to make him stop doing something that if not stopped, will end in the death of yourself or a loved one. This is where the shotgun and its broad selection of ammunition types comes into its own. Ad libing Clint Smith, "A rifle bullet makes a little hole going in, and a little bigger hole coming out, a pistol makes a little hole going in and sometimes doesn't even come out, but the one redeeming feature of the shotgun is that it removes bone and meat. We live on a farm. There have been home invasions in the area. In the last one, one of the perps was shot and killed by the homeowner.
Our alarm system connects by a cell phone, not a landline. The alarm system runs off a lead acid battery, good for a week. Our last power outage was 5 days.
I own guns and ammo. It would be a tragedy and a dereliction of duty if a gun was not handy if I needed one. A trigger locked shotgun is in the bedroom closet and the ammo for it is in a safe with an electronic key pad. It takes me about a minute to get the two mated up.
We have been burglarized twice. The last time was while we (and the dog) were sleeping, so developing a plan to stay in the bedroom (armed) until police arrive is not being paranoid. Just a natural reaction and learning from experience.
Shotgun ammo is 00Buck. If I lived in the city it would be #2 birdshot.
Police caught the perp and got my guns back quickly. The OPP in this area are outstanding.
