I am looking for a bolt action hunting rifle that is on the cheaper end. The ligher the better of course, probably not going to shoot it beyong 200 yard. No preference on caliber as long as it is suitable for big game animals.

If anyone has one that might want to sell, let me know.

Thanks

Rem 770s are garbage. That's all you need to know.

My stevens cost about $330 including tax and everything else. Prices may have gone up a bit now.

They are $309 with taxes and shipping, probably about $350-$360. Pretty good. Any other choices? I see stevens is under savage. Any major differences?

had one plastic trigger assembley plastic bolt guide.22 shots fired pulled the bolt through the bolt stop.WAS NOT IMPRESSED its history.

From what I've read, the Stevens is a "Savage", built using older savage parts from previous lines. They have a basic trigger, and a crummy stock.

That being said, they are a great basis for "improving", as the action is the same used throughout all Savage rifles. After tweaking the trigger spring and getting rid of the tupperware stock, I'm actually quite impressed as to what the result was.

One last thing, if you get a long action, make sure your scope has enough tube on it, or you will need to get extension rings/bases.

The Stevens is the savage 110 of 10 years ago. It has the original (well post about 1965) trigger that is still fully adjustable, though still not quite as nice as the Accu-trigger, and it's not quite as well finished as the Savage, but it's apparently still accurate.

The savage is about $200 dollars more than the stevens. How is the cost and benefit? Worth the money to go with the newer savage? I'll probably go with a 308

Haha this is how the "disease" starts: "Oh ________ is only X dollars more..."

You were asking sub-$400, and stevens is a good bet. Once you go higher, you get into tougher territory, like a remmy SPS, which is a good rig. It's almost personal preference at the ~$600 mark in my opinion.

Are you just looking for brand new? Plenty of old husqvarna mausers around in good calibers like .270 and .30-06. Check out trade ex, or the EE. Nicer rig than a stevens IMHO.

Thanks for all the input guys. Personally I like the remington 700 too. I am planning my first every hunting trip this year. I just don't want to buy an expensive gun taking it into the woods.
