I really like some of the Howa rifles. They arent too much coin, and definately a good rifle. Just check Frontier's link up top. They have a Howa lightning in the clearance section on sale for 479.00 A friend of mine has a similar rifle and its a great feeling gun to hold and shoot. (this one is in 300 win mag, definately good for bears......I shot a 340 pound black bear with a .300 win mag and it was dead before it hit the ground.)

Thanks, I will take a look at it

I just checked sakos, they are all close to $2,000 range. Did the prices go up lately or something. Last time I checked month ago they were about $1,500

Get the Husky 1600. Gives you a really good action to do a custom build from when you get deeper into the fun that is rifles and shooting :p

Alright, give 1600 a try. I just hope the finish are beter then norincos:p Out of the so many. Which one is the best one for the money? They all look the same to me. I don't mind paying a bit more for one in better condition.

Dude, c'mon. We can give advice, but sometimes you gotta make a few decisions yourself, you know?

Email the guys at tradex and ask for pics of ones you want to check out. If I were you, I would look at ones that have a "very good bore" and are already drilled and tapped for "weaver type bases". That'll give you a good start. Everything else just comes down to personal taste/opinion.

Just make sure you don't get one with "crack in the tang", as that either means badly bedded rifle, abused, poorly cured wood, or some other less than desirable problem that has occurred during its lifetime. Cut barrelled rifles also make me nervous as to how that crown was re-cut. But there are plenty there that are great condition. Just take your time, make a list of about 20, then study the good/bad listed for each and the price, and slowly whittle them down until you have one or two left. Then email for pictures, and take the plunge. And +1 to the above statement of picking a barrel that is very good or better rifling and drilled for weaver bases. That makes things easy on the shooter. Stay away from ones with obvious altering/bubba of the action and excessive drilling into the sides/top. Then if you have any questions, come back here and ask before you buy.

is the 6.5x55 adequite for bear?-I've taken over 30 blacktails and a couple of black bear, nothing went far, maybe 20 yards. Both black bears were hit broadside on the point of the shoulder and were immobalized right there[I have this thing about tracking wounded black bears in the salal so thick you can't see your feet,so only take a broadside, point of shoulder shot]Years ago I picked up a bunch of surplus 6.5x55 139 gr Century ammunition for $10 a box,and thats all I've ever used[just got some 140gr. privipartizan bullets now so will be trying that out]But for the price of ONE rifle-you can get TWO husky's-one in 6.5x55 and the other in 9,3x57[286 gr privipartizans @2000fps]-and both are well proven in the field-if you hold them straight, which is a bit easier as neither has heavy recoil. For comparisons sake-the ballistics of a 6.5xx55 and a 270 are virtually identical after 100 yards and a 9,3x57 fits somewhere between a winchester 358 and a 35 Wellen.Ammunition for the 9,3x62 is more readily available-but brass for the 9,3x57 is easily made by running 8x57 through a sizing die,and I'm finding reloading isn't as dificult or intimidating as I thought it was going to be.

I just sent Tradex some of the ones I picked out for detailed pics. All the ones I picked out are 1600. What is the difference with the sporter and fn98. They seem much cheaper

I can't believe the XL7 hasn't been stressed as much as it could have. it fits perfectly into the budget and I haven't read a bad thing about them yet. in fact, I'm lining myself up to buy one in 30.06 because of that. tho the Tikka T3 is also tempting...especially with that new thread with how well their .270 shot out of box. $200 more then the XL7 and .5" MOA tighter groupings! :D

going the route of the XL7, it would be easy to grab a Bushnell 3200 for $220 from a multitude of places too.
