I have handled and shot them all. I would rank them like so
1)Ruger American- the only reason this is above the axis is because of the stock quality and the rotary magazine which im a fan of in any rifle! Accuracy was about the same;right around that 1"@100 yards Trigger was good for the price, about 4.5 lbs when we shot it.
2) Savage Axis- really liked this gun for the price. Stock quality was lacking, it was flimsy actually. the magazine i wasnt a fan of, but it shot 0.98" @100 yards with cheap federal blue box ammo (270 win 130gr) trigger was extremely heavy, breaking at about 6lbs.
3)Remington 783- im disappointed in remington. The stock is garbage, the action was loose, and rough going, fit and finish was horrible. The only good thing I found was the trigger was half a$$ decent at about 4.5-5 lbs
4)Mossberg ATR- I shot this gun in 308 and I hated it. We couldnt get it to group worth shat at 100 yards with ANY kind of ammo (reloads included). It kicked hard for a 308 and the stock, trigger, action, magazine were all cheap and plasticy.

I would personally recommend a vanguard s2, yes they are heavy (8.5 lbs scoped) but accurate, and feel like a rifle. Trigger is awesome, stock is good (it doesnt fit me all that great but for quality its good) and the action is awesome! another choice of mine would be a tikka t3. Yes they are a bit pricy but they are great guns, lightweight, accurate and just a great quality of firearm!

I tried to order a Stevens Model 200 from Cabelas , and was told that Stevens was not making them anymore.....so I purchased one from the Gundealer ( 300Win.Mag. ) , and they also told me that Stevens had discontinued them and that they were unable to order any more....that was around a year ago....I think they said it was being replaced by the Savage Axis.....

That's the trouble with relying on retailers for information. It's a lot of work to figure out the right questions so you can tell whether the answer includes facts or whether the person understands what they are telling you. Cabelas doesn't list the Stevens 200 anymore. Wholesale Sports still shows it on their website, though only in a couple of calibres. And the Savage website still shows it. So maybe Cabelas expects the Stevens to be discontinued and stopped ordering them. Maybe they have been discontinued and Savage can't be bothered to update their website. Maybe the Savage Axis has replaced the Stevens 200 in Cabelas but not at Savage.

I have 2 Howa's (weatherby vanguards) and they are head and shoulders above the above mentioned. Howa makes the vanguards for weatherby in Japan. (Howa machinery) Howa also made guns for Smith and Wesson, and Mossberg over the years. Plus others. Try to find yourself a new or used Vanguard. They are "real rifles" among the "beginner" stuff out there.

Another vote for weatherby s2,brother bought one in 338 wm. Shoots nice well balanced, put a moose in the freezer for him ,no hiccups.

While i agree that the vanguard is above the others,it's not in the poll and it is more expensive than the poll choices. Having said that, i just picked up a mossberg /howa 1500 in '30-06 that i'm looking forward to trying out.
YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED. My Howa's are SOOOOOOOO nice and smooth. One wears a Hogue stock and is stainless, while the other is older with a nice wood stock, blued with open sites. I can't count the times I have been offered money for either or both. Every single time one of my friends or associates picks up one of the Howa's they pull out their wallet and start with the offers. One of the best kept secrets in all of the gun world

I realize that the Axis is good on a price point, and they shoot good, but they are F-ing
ugly. As Jerry from Mystic Precision pointed out...The Axis is ok, so long as you take it out to,
and back from the field in a paper bag!;)
