I think the OP should consider the terrain and foliage or lack of it on his property, as a given factor in his choice, and the degree of land he owns.
For example a prairie dweller might need a 22-250 or a 243.
Yet someone on Vancouver Island or PEI might get by just fine with a 17 Fireball or a 22 Hornet.
Everyone's answer could be right for thier own special conditions.

Or they could shoot a .223 and cut the difference...

Thanks all,,didn't consider the pelts was just looking to control population on the property..

go with the bigger cal, I'd rather see them drop dead in their tracks, one shot - one instant kill type of thing. I have a 6mm for the task.
