best do-all calibre

The question really depends on what you're going to hunt most often. When I bought my first (and only) centrefire a couple years back I knew I'd need something that could handle it all. But I don't hunt moose and elk every year, while I do hunt sheep and deer every year. So, the one ideal gun was a fairly light .270 wsm. Enough punch for moose, elk and bear with good bullets, enough reach for sheep, and just fine for whitetail. If I was going to hunt elk every year, that ideal gun would have been a 30-06 or another fast .30, but I think it's a little misguided - when you can only afford one rifle - to buy a gun based on what you might one day need instead of what you need every year. I can make the short mag work for moose every 4 years, so in this case, while the wsm isn't exactly the ideal for every species on the continent, it is the ideal for my specific situation.

This is the best opinion I have heard on the subject to date.
Kudos

my dictionaries say otherwise. i've never heard of anyone being rediculed.

urban dictionary online: Rediculous- the alarmingly common misspelling of ridiculous.

hey, you .30 cal guys, anybody shoot a 300 h&h? looks like a nice cart.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but not only are you using the wrong dictionary but you've asked this question @ the wrong place. I think you're looking for CANADIANONEGUNHUNTER.COM?

30-06 ro 7MM Mag. I have both & would take on any game animal in North America with either one.:D

.308 / 7.62

Will do anything a Rifleman asks, in a short-actioned, handy rifle.

If after specialized game, whether mountain goat, gopher or water buffalo, then a speacilized rifle would better fill the need.

I've dropped moose at 300 meters and men further than that, and never felt under gunned with a .308!

Cheers,

Ben

X2, Oooah! It always does the business.

i have several, but used that one for its accessibility, its online. whatever, this isn't a spelling bee anyhow. perhaps i can dumb it down for you lazyike: what if the government only allowed you to have one large centrefire rifle, what would you then choose? i threw the question out there for fun, so if you don't want to participate, feel free to go and ---- yourself.:D

to everyone else, thanks for participating.

With responses like that all you are looking to do is stir the s**t pot :D

If the Government told me I could only have one centerfire rifle I would tell them to go and ---- Themselves  :D

wow, you're smart. (its spelled ridiculous). at any rate, its a "what if question", so no need to be a prick about it.
122 posts in and you are lecturing me on spelling and etiquette... you funny...:D
This is a gun board... your question has been asked 100 times already.... if you can't be original you should at least expect a little levity.

I though I was participating and having fun?

I notice that original question has evolved to include the government: Now, is this government that is going to limit us to one centerfire also going to limit us to a single shot? One day of hunting and only one animal per year? If thats where we're headed with this thread I'm changing my answer to. 243, wednesday sept 24 and Red Angus

If I only had one it would be the 264 win mag ..... greatly overshadowed by the 7 mm, but still the best overall IMHO.

Flat shooting, great punch, high velocity. 6.5 mm (264) might just be the most balistically stable bullet ever designed. You can reload down to 100 grain for deer and up to 140 (and 160) grain for elk and moose. My 264 has never failed me in ... my god ... is it 29 years??? :D

7.62x39!!!

j/k :p

Seriously, I vote 30-06. Will kill anything you point it at :D Alternately, if the definition of "centrefire rifle calibers" includes 12 gauge sabot slugs for use in rifled slug guns, I'd have to consider 12 gauge as a do-all as well ;) Hypothetically speaking, of course...

Would this include Bear defence or Zombies.....?

I cant see the ole .06 being under gunned for any of Canadas game (even Musk-ox) But would feel better with a .338 or even a ...nah .375 is just too big. Thats it the .338 is the s**t. Now for the most common of Canadas game ie deer moose I think one cant go wrong with the .308. Just my humble opinion.
