Put a shout out to local club shooters and offer to pay for a few mags of their caliber of choice.
It will put variety in your hands and come with the experienced owner as well.
You'll get a feel for what it will cost to shoot a given gun, how they shoot for you and what it costs to get into that gun.
That, and you'll meet some like minded shooter folk you may shoot with for many years to come.
Or, get a reliable .22 and shoot a dozen bricks, then roll the edcuated dice on liking whatever you trade/buy up to.
If you're not thinking .22, you should as many have said.
It's just the sensible way to learn pistol shooting and still save for larger caibers.
I doubt anyone has regretted owning a 22 pistol - maybe regret not owning something else sooner, but not having a 22...
Couple bills could have you shooting.
