Best gun for white horse, yukon?

Anyone going to the meet and great CFO at prophet river. That would be the way to fight back in other provinces issue as many ATC as possible.

Sadly they don't give ATCs unless it's work related from what I've heard. Simply going on vacation in bear country isn't good enough.

Also a pistol isn't better in relation to stopping power or effectiveness. Their advantage is the compactness/light weight, and you're giving up a lot of power to get that size/ weight. Now, you might argue that a 454 or 460sw would provide plenty of power, but then you're giving up shootability - how fast can you get a second shot off with a 454 handgun compared to your 454 rifle?

My point is there's tradeoffs for both. Chances are very low the OP could get an ATC so it's kinda a moot point, but simply because you CAN carry a handgun doesn't automatically make it better. I sure do wish it was an option for more of us though.

The reason I figure the revolver would be best is, like you say, compactness/light weight. It leaves your hands free, and you don't have a rifle slung over your shoulder. I guess it would depend on what exactly you were doing.... I would think fishing with a rifle over your shoulder would be clumsy, so in all likelyhood the rifle would be set down somewhere, not ideal if you need it in a hurry. As to how quickly a guy could get a second shot as compared to a rifle, I don't know, something to try out I guess. How many shots is a guy gonna get anyway? One? Better make that first one count, second would just be insurance, If you need a third, its likely too late and you're dinner. Realistically your best line of defense is awareness---not putting yourself in that situation in the first place. Then bear spray, then, finally, the firearm, which hopefully you do not need.

I could be way out to lunch though, as I have never been in that situation.

Would a short barreled, fixed stock (only as long as you need to exceed the minimum OAL) straight pull Maverick in 308 with a 10 XCR pistol magazine work for this?

One would think the smart choice(with whats available in my safe) would be the Marlin 1895G in 45-70, loaded with a heavy 450 or 480 gr hardcast, but my Rossi 92 in 454 Casull (which has given me absolutely zero reasons to not trust it) is just so nice to carry, and is no slouch either...

Even better would be to apply for a wilderness atc, & Ruger super blackhawk.

I would like the 45-70 G rifle loaded with my 540 gr hard cast gas checked Boolits and a RSB 44 mag loaded with my 310 gr hard cast gas checked Boolits ! jmo RJ

What's your slug brand/ weight recommendation for a 12" barrel?

When I was looking at 12g ammo for bears. All my digging came up with Federal Deep Peña tractor and Brenneke black magic.
Have never found either in stock when I’ve looked around.

I think that's the right product. They're not your standard rifled slug design, and if you do some searching on cgn you'll find some testing done with em.

Edit - here's the thread. Sadly a bunch of the pictures are no longer there. If I remember later I'm going to PM the OP and let him know his pics are gone because they really added to the thread.

Short barrel 45-70 would be my choice. Learn different sling/carry options as std over the shoulder or across the back are annoying cumbersome and slow for engagement should it be needed. A properly carried gun should be retained close to your body, 100% hands free, immediately accessible, and comfortable. A rifle left on the ground or slung across your back might be useless should the need arise.

I agree with the challenger slugs for a 12g if that's the way you go, I would prefer my kimber montana in 338 win mag as its nice to carry all day long and I rarely use it with a sling while hunting the northern B.C mountains. Or my 375 h&h just cause it's a great cartridge. Keep in mind you'll probably not fire a shot at all if it's a protection gun, just toting a gun around all day will probably get annoying if it's heavier and too long. I sold my 45-70 as it was heavy, un-accurate and not related but limits your distance while hunting. I would rather a 30-06 over a 45-70 any day. The lightest and among the handiest would be a short 12g if not hunting.

^^^this^^^ I have had a Zing Sling type sling on my 45-70 for years. I even go so far as swapping it out to other rifles depending on the mission at hand so to speak. Hands free and always right there when ya need it. No better sling out there for long guns if ya ask me.
